Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT or Pet Therapy) began in the 1990’s, and currently growing scientific research proves that a pet’s innate ability for unconditional love can make humans healthier and happier. Dogs are currently being used to alleviate Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD), horses can cure kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), and dolphins can relieve depression just to name a few treatment uses for animals. Positive results like those named previously are possible simply because when pets are used to resolve mental health issues they lift spirits, lessen depression, decrease feelings of isolation and loneliness, encourage communication, reduce boredom, decrease anxiety, help children overcome speech and emotional disorders, and motivate recovery.
To experience first-hand the many treatment benefits of animals, be sure to stop by the “Petting Parlor” for a little pet therapy yourself, and learn more about how these animals are being used for treating food addictions, and patients presenting trauma-related disorders. SoulPaws will have their rescue animals on-hand to help teach and demonstrate animal assisted therapy. You will be able to experience hands-on with cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and even a mini horse, the many therapeutic benefits of pet therapy available for your patients. Animals will not be at the booth all day, so be sure to visit the SoulPaws booth to see the posted scheduled times that animals will be on-hand for petting.
For psychotherapists who want to dive deeper into using pets in mental health treatment SoulPaws will also be delivering a 3-hour, hands-on workshop from 2:15 p.m. – 5:45 p.m., Thursday, April 26, 2018.
