 CAMFT Behind the Scenes

Welcome to “Behind the Scenes.” This monthly, online column provides members with a backstage pass to see what CAMFT is doing to serve our members and how we are working to ensure that the interests of LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees are being served.

March,  2013

  • Staff and Board members attended 8 meetings with: the California Coalition for Mental Health; Mental Health Irregulars; MFT leadership collaborative; Treatment & Evaluation Resource Management ("TERM") Advisory Board; and the Orange County, Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Central Coast MFT Consortiums. It is critical for CAMFT to have a place at the table with other mental health professionals and regulatory bodies. These meetings will always be a high priority.

  • Staff Attorneys responded to 2042 calls from members with questions on legal, ethical, and licensure issues.  Access to this expert, legal guidance is one of the most beneficial and popular member benefits.

  • 13,611 people visited the CounselingCalifornia.com website with 11,530 of those being unique visitors. There were hits to 2,972 different therapist profiles and 29,021 total page views. This marketing tool is available to all clinical, associate, and life members for the purpose of promoting services to the public. Create your profile now.

  • CAMFT’s lobbyist and staff participated in 4 PAC events. The goal of the CAMFT PAC is to ensure that Marriage and
Family Therapist-friendly candidates and incumbents from both political parties get elected to the California legislature. We support candidates who have demonstrated an understanding and willingness to fight for the issues
most important to Marriage and Family Therapists.

  • Staff submitted 11 position letters to various California legislators and committees regarding the following legislation—Assembly Bills:  268, 404, 428, 451, 790, and 958; Senate Bills:  22, 138, 282, and 578. CAMFT consistently interacts with key legislators to reinforce how proposed legislation may be beneficial or harmful to LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees.   Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s commitment to members.

  • Staff presented at 2 schools: Fresno State, and Cal Southern University. Presentations to schools are an effective way to engage the next generation of CAMFT members.

  • Staff Attorneys presented 3 Law and Ethics seminars at the following chapters/agencies/schools:  Redding Regional Chapter, San Diego North County Chapter, and Hope International University. The law and ethics seminar is a valuable training tool that gets consistently positive response from LMFTs and other participants.

  • The CAMFT Board of Directors met March 22-23 in Washington DC. View highlights from the Board of Directors meeting. The Board will meet again June 8-9, 2013, in San Diego, CA.

  • Staff and Board members participated in meetings with the following 13 United States Senators and Congressional Representatives or members of their staff—U.S. Senators: Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein; Congressional Representatives: Henry Waxman, Jerry McNerney, Lois Capps, Mike Thompson, Doris Matsui,  Devin Nunes, Paul Cook, Julia Brownley, Sam Farr, George Miller, and Gloria Negrete McLeod.  The CAMFT Board of Directors travels to Washington, DC, each year to lobby key member of the California delegation on Medicare and Department of Veterans Affairs issues.
