Dear Members,

Happy Holidays! As we approach the end of 2018, I want to reflect on the end of my first year as Executive Director of CAMFT. It’s been a remarkable year, and CAMFT has done a lot this year to provide you with excellent service.

What has CAMFT done this year that we can celebrate?

  • CAMFT began assessing customer satisfaction with brief surveys following calls to the Info Center or the Legal Team. If you have called CAMFT since August 2018, you should have received a brief survey assessing your call. CAMFT will use this information to provide feedback to staff and to further improve its already strong customer service.
  • The Annual Conference saw the highest number of attendees in at least 8 years. Over 900 attendees came to the AC this April. Great speakers including Gabor Mate, Vincent Felitti, and Adi Jaffe contributed to this excellent turnout. Attendees from 5 countries came to listen to Dr. Mate’s approach on trauma.
  • Clinical membership is at its highest level ever. As of October 2018, CAMFT had a total of 19,927 Clinical members. This is 900 more than the same time in 2017, and over 1200 more than the same time in 2016.
  • CAMFT developed a partnership with Give An Hour. In response to the tragic family separations occurring at the US border this past summer, CAMFT partnered with Give an Hour to allow CAMFT members who wish to offer services a way to do so in an organized manner. Give an Hour is a great organization that assists veterans, immigrants, and other groups through pro bono services by volunteers, including LMFTs.
  • Three positions (1 full-time, 2 part-time) have been developed for individuals with a marriage and family therapist background. The Managing Director of Clinical Affairs will be responsible for communications and public relations for the organization, while two Educational Outreach Liaisons will connect with students and faculty at universities.
  • CAMFT has been more active on social media.
    • Facebook Live chats, called #AskCAMFT, have featured attorneys answering questions on specific topics, such as writing letters for support animals, the California Law & Ethics exam, and Telehealth. Over 5,400 views occurred with 4 videos.
    • Expanding from typical posts about CAMFT activities, CAMFT has been posting on topics of California and national concern. Postings on therapist safety, CAMFT actions on the border crisis, the Thousand Oaks shootings, and California fires have resulted in hundreds of likes on Facebook.<.li>
  • The Ethics Committee is finalizing a revision of the Ethics Code. The Ethics Committee has been working on this project for several years, and is approaching the end of its revision process. The proposed revisions will go to the Board, then to members for feedback. This process should allow all members to have a chance to comment on the suggested revisions.

This is just a snapshot of the wonderful things that CAMFT has accomplished this year. Kudos to the CAMFT Board of Directors, and CAMFT volunteers for their vision in guiding CAMFT this year. CAMFT has an amazing staff that support all these activities and much more. And none of this would be possible without the over 32,000 members that we have across the state!

This has been an amazing 2018, and I look forward to what CAMFT will accomplish in 2019 and beyond! Happy holidays and Happy New Year!
