“The MFT Scope of Practice in the 21st Century”… Language for the Future
February 17, 2018 | 10:00 AM-12:00 PM
Hyatt Regency-San Francisco Airport | Burlingame, CA
Come together with other CAMFT members, Board members, volunteers, and staff to contribute to the important discussion of whether the time is right to update and improve the MFT scope of practice.
As CAMFT has advocated for Medicare reimbursement, removing barriers to employment at the VA and other public sector jobs, it has become clear that there is a strong consumer (and legislator) misconception that MFTs provide “marriage counseling” only. While that is partially attributed to the license title, itself, it also is the result of the outdated scope of practice definition.
MFTs know that they must operate under the legally defined scope of practice, but when was the last time you actually thought about the language of the law?
- Does the language adequately reflect MFTs’ equality with other psychotherapists?
- Does the scope describe both the MFT in private practice, but also public health? Does it accurately describe the span and diversity of your practice?
- What are the potential benefits and risks of modifying the scope at this time?
The 2018 CAMFT Connects aims to foster discussion about what changes or amendments could make the scope of practice more relevant to today’s California MFT and whether the time is right to push forward on these changes. We look forward to a dialogue with members from a variety of backgrounds and practice areas on this important topic.
Attendees: Please feel free to come early to also hear the “State of CAMFT” presentation from 8:00AM-9:30AM to get up-to-date information about current legislation, regulation, and hot topics which affect CAMFT, its members, and the mental health field.
