------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Beyond the 12 Steps: Harm Reduction Psychotherapy as the
Effective Alternative (FR4)
Friday, May 2, 2008
10:15 a.m.
to 4:15 p.m. (4 CE Hrs.)

Most
clinicians have been taught very little about issues
of substance
misuse and are left to rely on the peer-based
support of 12 Step groups. However, if we want to treat
substance misuse as opposed to merely supporting people
who are trying to maintain abstinence, we need a theory
and a set of clinical practices that are evidence-based.
Harm Reduction Psychotherapy (HRP), developed by the presenter,
is such a model. HRP is built on a combination of public
health principles, cognitive behavioral strategies, the
neurobiology of trauma, and the psychodynamics of a person’s
relationship to alcohol and other drugs. (*CD of workshop
available for purchase.)
Dr. Patt
Denning is the Director of Clinical Services and Training
at the Harm
Reduction Therapy Center in San Francisco.
Over 30 years
of experience in community mental health
and in private practice inform her understanding of complex
clients. Dr. Denning holds a Diplomate-Fellow in Psychopharmacology
and also was listed in the Drug Policy Resources Directory
for the Media in the area of
Dual Diagnosis. She is a Certified Addiction Specialist
through the American Psychological Association’s
College of Professional Psychology.

We
now understand that all psychiatric disease is the
result of biopsychosocial
factors. Effective and successful
treatment of Mood and Anxiety Disorders consequently
requires effective address of all etiological factors.
All psychotherapists
are now required to have a basic under standing of the
biological aspects of mental illness, including the use
of appropriate medications. You will learn what the psychotherapist
must know today to practice state of the art biopsychosocial
treatment of Depression, Bipolar, Anxiety, Panic, Obsessions,
Compulsions and Eating Disorders. We will discuss
the Practical Psychopharmacology of these disorders,
including Points and Pearls about the different medications,
their indications and side effects to more accurately
assess
and successfully co-manage these patients. Working with
psychiatrists/ physicians can be very stressful for many
psychotherapists and co-management is fraught with potential
pitfalls, but also with opportunities for success. You
will learn the Seven Keys to Successful Co-Treatment.
We will learn using cases to illustrate the points—cases
from your practice and from mine. (*CD of workshop available

Anger, Trust, and Intimacy—Implications for
Treatment (FR2)
Friday, May 2, 2008
10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. (2 CE Hrs.)
*CD Available
All
relationships have a power component. Its guises include
passive-aggressiveness,
breaking agreements, withholding
sex, chronic “forgetting,” and outright power
struggles. Unresolved power issues lead to anger—chronic
arguing, undependable emotional support, unfair fighting.
It’s hard to trust in such an environment, so we
see couples refusing to negotiate, partners who keep secrets,
and people taking their partner’s feelings personally.
Understanding how these dynamics interact in couples’ systems
can lead to more sophisticated diagnoses and treatment,
and innovative interventions. (*CD of workshop available
for purchase.)

Marty Klein has been an MFT and Certified Sex
Therapist for 27 years, supporting the healthy sexual

Other Myths that Undermine
Treatment (FR3)
Friday, May 2, 2008
2:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. (3 CE Hrs.), *CD Available
Is “sex addiction” a helpful construct? Are we
treating sexual “dysfunctions” that are simply
the result of normal aging, medication side effects, or relationship
issues? How do our field’s gender stereotypes disempower
our patients? When we talk to clients about S/M, pornography,
and non-monogamy, on what theories—and facts—are
we basing our judgments? This workshop provides a chance to
examine—and perhaps change—the clinical assumptions
that drive much of our work. (*CD of workshop available for
purchase.)

mistakes therapists make when dealing with insurance, and identify
the 12 crucial questions to ask when checking a client’s
