Power,
Anger, Trust, and Intimacy—Implications for Treatment (FR2) All relationships have a power component. Its guises include passive-aggressiveness, breaking agreements, withholding sex, chronic “forgetting,” and outright power struggles. Unresolved power issues lead to anger—chronic arguing, undependable emotional support, unfair fighting. It’s hard to trust in such an environment, so we see couples refusing to negotiate, partners who keep secrets, and people taking their partner’s feelings personally. Understanding how these dynamics interact in couples’ systems can lead to more sophisticated diagnoses and treatment, and innovative interventions. (*CD of workshop available for purchase, see page 16 for details.) “Sex
Addiction” and Other Myths that Undermine Is “sex addiction” a helpful construct? Are we treating sexual “dysfunctions” that are simply the result of normal aging, medication side effects, or relationship issues? How do our field’s gender stereotypes disempower our patients? When we talk to clients about S/M, pornography, and non-monogamy, on what theories—and facts—are we basing our judgments? This workshop provides a chance to examine—and perhaps change—the clinical assumptions that drive much of our work. (*CD of workshop available for purchase, see page 16 for details.)
