CAMFT Behind the Scenes

Welcome to “Behind the Scenes.”   This monthly, online column provides members with a backstage pass to see what CAMFT is doing to serve our members and how we are working to ensure that LMFTs interests are being served.

February, 2012

  • Staff attended meetings with:  Mental Health Irregulars, MFT Leadership Collaborative, the Board of Behavioral Sciences, and the Treatment and Evaluation Resource Management (“TERM”) Advisory Board. It is critical for CAMFT to have a place at the table with other mental health professionals and regulatory bodies. These meetings will always be a high priority.

  • Staff Attorneys responded to 2,025 calls from members on legal, ethical, and licensure issues.  Access to this expert, legal guidance is one of the most beneficial and popular member benefits.

  • 13,360 people visited the CounselingCalifornia.com website, with hits to 3,026 different therapist profiles and 8,138 unique therapist profile pagviews. This marketing tool is available to all clinical, associate, and life members for the purpose of promoting services to the public.  Create your profile now..

  • CAMFT’s lobbyist participated in 4 PAC events. The goal of the CAMFT PAC is to ensure that Marriage and Family Therapist-friendly candidates and incumbents from both political parties get elected to the California legislature. We support candidates who have demonstrated an understanding and willingness to fight for the issues most important to Marriage and Family Therapists. Click here to donate to the CAMFT PAC!

  • Board Members participated in 1 Town Hall Meeting with a California State Senator. CAMFT consistently interacts with key legislators to reinforce how proposed legislation may be beneficial or harmful to LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees. Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s commitment to members.

  • Staff and Board members participated in 6 meetings with chapters:  Southwest Riverside County, Ventura County, Santa Cruz, San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, and the Central San Joaquin Valley Chapter. Chapter meetings are a prime opportunity for CAMFT leadership and staff to hear directly from members and exchange ideas for serving members. Click here to connect with your local chapter.

  • The Chapter Leadership Conference was held on February 10 & 11, 2012 in San Jose, CA.  There were approximately 90 chapter volunteers in attendance representing 26 of the 29 chapters of CAMFT.   The Chapter Leadership Conference is hosted each year by CAMFT to provide education and networking opportunities to individuals volunteering within local CAMFT chapters.

  • The CAMFT Ethics Committee, Educational Foundational Board of Directors, Clinical Editorial Committee, and Trauma Response Network Committee met. If you are interested in serving on a Committee, please send a cover letter indicating the committee in which you are interested along with your resume to CAMFT at 7901 Raytheon Road, San Diego, CA 92111 by April 15, 2012. Committee appointments are made by the President of the Board of Directors. Click here for a list of Committees.

  • Staff Attorneys presented 3 Law and Ethics seminars at the following chapters/agencies/schools:  Redwood Empire Chapter, Inland Empire Chapter, and Mira Costa College. The law and ethics seminar is a valuable training tool that gets consistently positive response from MFTs and other participants.

  • Staff coordinated 2 parenting magazine “Ask the Expert” articles, 2 broadcast interviews, and 1 press release (posted by 218 online outlets), all of which highlighted CAMFT members as mental health experts.  Articles and television interviews by or featuring LMFTs educate potential clients about the services and scope of knowledge of LMFTs.

  • CAMFT hosted a media training session attended by 10 members from across the state at the Chapter Leadership Conference in San Jose. This training prepares selected members to effectively communicate with the media if called upon to share their expertise in their local communities. Collaborating with local media markets increases the visibility of LMFTs and their scope of practice among the public.

  • The CAMFT website has been streamlined and reorganized to help you quickly find the information you are seeking.
