Welcome to the first edition of “Behind the
Scenes.” This monthly, online column provides
members with a backstage pass to see what CAMFT is doing to serve you
and how we are working to promote the interests of Marriage and Family
Therapists.

Staff attended meetings with the following: Access
Coalition, Mental Health Services Act Partners Forum, Department
of Managed Health Care/Consumer Provider Plan Agency, County
Mental Health Directors Association, Mental Health Services Oversight
and Accountability Commission, CA State Association of Counties, the
Irregulars, MFT Regional Consortium of Greater Los Angeles, MFT Regional
Consortium of Central Coast, MFT Regional Consortium of San Diego, MFT
Leadership Collaborative, Treatment and Evaluation Resources Management
Program of San Diego, and the Executive Officer of the BBS. It
is critical for CAMFT to have a place at the table with other mental
health professionals and regulatory bodies. These meetings will
always be a high priority.

Staff submitted 13 position letters to the following
Committees: Assembly Committee on Aging and Long Term Care,
Assembly Committee on Business Professions and Consumer Protection,
Assembly Committee on Health, Assembly Committee on
Judiciary, Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senate Committee on
Business Professions and Economic Development, Senate Committee on
Education, Senate Committee on Health, Senate Committee on Human
Services, and the Senate Committee on Judiciary. In
addition, staff submitted a position letter of support for our sponsored
bill, AB 956, to all 40 members of the Senate and sent a letter to the
Governor supporting the BBS request for an exemption to the statewide
hiring freeze. CAMFT consistently sends position letters to key
legislators to reinforce how proposed legislation may be beneficial or
harmful to MFTs. Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s
commitment to members.

Staff Attorneys responded to 2,069 calls from
members on legal, ethical, and licensure issues. Access to this
expert, legal guidance is one of the most beneficial and popular member
benefits.

9,530 people visited the CounselingCalifornia.com
website. This website is a free marketing tool available to
all Clinical and Life members as a way to promote your practice to the
public. You can create your profile now by visiting www.counselingcalifornia.com.

Staff and Board members participated in Chapter meetings
in: East Bay, Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Fernando
Valley (Trauma Response Committee).Chapter meetings are a prime
opportunity for CAMFT leadership and staff to hear directly from members
and exchange ideas for serving members.

Staff Attorneys presented Law and Ethics seminars at the
following Chapters/agencies: Delta-Stockton Chapter, Regional
Counseling Services - Department of Veterans Affairs, Olive Crest
Treatment Center, and Redding Chapter. The Law and Ethics seminar is
a valuable training tool that consistently receives positive
feedback from MFTs and other participants.

Staff exhibited at the 2011 Cultural Competence and
Mental Health Summit. This event helped promote the
online therapist directory on CounselingCalifornia.com to the public and
also to market CAMFT to prospective members.

Staff distributed a letter to 72 associations
representing key referral sources (e.g., physicians, school counselors
and attorneys) to encourage partnership opportunities. CAMFT
regularly conducts outreach to other professionals.

Staff coordinated the submission of “Ask the
Expert” articles to June issues of Parenting Orange
County and Sacramento Parent. Promoting members in the media
showcases the talent and scope of an MFT’s expertise.

CAMFT Board of Directors held their quarterly
meeting. Board meetings are open to all members and the
next meeting will be held September 17-18, 2011 in San
Francisco.

CAMFT Ethics Committee held their quarterly meeting.
The Ethics Committee reviews complaints against members and monitors
members’ compliance with BBS-imposed probations.
