Welcome to “Behind the Scenes.” This monthly, online column
provides members with a backstage pass to see what CAMFT is doing to
serve our members and how we are working to ensure that the interests of
LMFTs and MFT Interns and Trainees are being served.

Staff attended meetings with: Mental Health
Irregulars; Department of Managed Heath Care (DMHC)/Consumer
Provider Plan Agency (CPPA) Mental Health Workgroup; the Treatment and
Evaluation Resource Management (“TERM”) Advisory Board; and
the Central Coast and San Diego MFT Consortiums. It is critical for
CAMFT to have a place at the table with other mental health
professionals and regulatory bodies. These meetings will always be a
high priority.

Staff submitted 19 position letters to: Governor
Jerry Brown, Assembly Committees on Judiciary and Business, Professions
and Consumer Protection; Senate Committees on Appropriations;
Health; and Business, Professions and Economic Development, Senator
Price, Senator Steinberg, Senator Emmerson, Senator Yee, Senator Leno,
Assembly Member Smyth, Assembly Member Lowenthal, Assembly Member Beall,
Assembly Member Feuer, and Assembly Member Hayashi. CAMFT consistently
interacts with key legislators to reinforce how proposed legislation may
be beneficial or harmful to LMFTs and MFT Interns and
Trainees. Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s
commitment to members.

Board Members attended 3 meetings with: Senator Mark
DeSaulnier, representative for Assemblyman Jeff Miller, and
representative for Congressman John Campbell. CAMFT consistently
interacts with key legislators to reinforce how proposed legislation may
be beneficial or harmful to LMFTs and MFT Interns and
Trainees. Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s
commitment to members.

CAMFT’s lobbyist and staff attended 4 hearings
on: SB 632, 1183, 1134, and 1172. CAMFT consistently
interacts with key legislators to reinforce how proposed legislation may
be beneficial or harmful to LMFTs and MFT Interns and
Trainees. Advocacy is a cornerstone of CAMFT’s
commitment to members.

Staff Attorneys responded to 1,798 calls from members
with questions on legal, ethical, and licensure issues.
Access to this expert, legal guidance is one of the most beneficial
and popular member benefits.

15,735 people visited the CounselingCalifornia.com
website with 13,450 of those being unique visitors. There were
hits to 4,200 different therapist profiles and 35,070 total page views.

CAMFT’s lobbyist and staff participated in 3 PAC
events. The goal of the CAMFT PAC is to ensure that
Marriage and Family Therapist-friendly candidates and incumbents from
both political parties get elected to the California legislature. We
support candidates who have demonstrated an understanding and
willingness to fight for the issues most important to Marriage and

Staff and Board members presented at 2 schools:
Pepperdine University and National University. Presentations to
schools are an effective way to engage the next generation of CAMFT
members.

Staff and Board members participated in meetings with 4
chapters: Orange County, Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, and
the Ventura County Chapter (hosted a reception for the CAMFT Board).
Chapter meetings are a prime opportunity for CAMFT leadership and
staff to hear directly from members and exchange ideas for serving

Staff Attorneys presented 4 Law and Ethics seminars at the
following chapters/agencies/schools: Olive Crest (non-profit),
National University, and the San Diego and Desert Chapters of CAMFT.
The law and ethics seminar is a valuable training tool that gets
consistently positive response from MFTs and other
participants.

Staff coordinated 2 parenting magazine “Ask the
Expert” responses, and distributed 2 articles that appeared on
over 248 online postings. Print and television interviews
by or featuring LMFTs educate potential clients about the services and
scope of knowledge of LMFTs.

Staff posted 8 new video podcasts on
CounselingCalifornia.com. The 2-5 minute videos feature CAMFT
members addressing topical mental wellness issues.
CounselingCalifornia.com educates the public about the benefits of
mental wellness and how to access services.

The CAMFT Board of Directors met June 9-10 in Westlake
Village, CA. View
