In October 2003, Southern California experienced the worst series of wild fires in the state’s history. Totaling 14 separate fires in 5 counties, the fire siege resulted in 24 deaths, 246 injuries, over 3,600 structures destroyed, and almost 740,000 acres burned. The cost to respond to these fires and the accumulated damage are estimated to be over $3 billion.
