(SU1) Cultural Competency (CC)
with LGBT Clients
with Lisa Maurel, MFT
10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
(2 CE hrs)

This workshop will focus on equipping attendees with history, theory,
research, and current sociological trends in the queer communities that
are essential to any understanding of LGBT client issues. There will
also be a focus on enabling therapists to become more aware of their own
bias regarding sexuality, gender, and the formation of family
relationships, that could impede their ability to effectively work with
LGBT clients or extended family systems.
Presenter: Lisa Maurel, MFT, has been practicing
for over 14 years and has a broad range of experience in working with
diverse family constellations, individuals, and couples, from a variety
of cultural, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In the past nine
years, Lisa has devoted herself to professional development in the area
of LGBT cultural competency. She is motivated both by her personal life
experience, and professional experience. Sharing what she learned about
LGBT families with other therapists is Lisa’s passion. She has
developed two websites to serve the LGBT community: www.genderpath.com
and www.therapy4oclesbians.com.
Article by Lisa Maurel, MFT published in the January/February 2010
issue of The Therapist - Becoming Culturally Competent with LGBT Clients.
