Certified Supervisor Program

The CAMFT Certified Supervisor Program is a voluntary program—unique to the needs of supervisors and supervisees within the State of California, which goes above and beyond the BBS requirements for supervision. The program is multifaceted and includes coursework, supervision, supervision consultation, and a consultation summary.

In order to participate in the program, you must have been licensed as a therapist in California for a minimum of two years.

The skills needed to be an effective supervisor are different than the skills needed to be an effective clinician. The CAMFT Certified Supervisor Program prepares you for your role as a supervisor!

How Do I Become Certified?

  • Coursework – Take Comprehensive Supervision I, II & III. The coursework must total at least 18 hours.  A description of the topics covered in each course can be found in the Certified Supervisor Program Candidate Handbook.
  • Supervision Experience – Conduct 52 weeks of supervision. At the conclusion of the supervision process, provide a weekly supervision log.
  • Supervision Consultation – Complete 12 hours of consultation with an individual who serves as your mentor/consultant. At the conclusion of the consultation process, provide a monthly consultation log. Click here for a list of CAMFT Certified Supervisors who qualify as a consultant.
  • Written Case Summary – Write a 3-5 page paper discussing various aspects of the supervision process. An outline listing the exact topics to be addressed can be found in the Certified Supervisor Program Candidate Handbook: www.camft.org/csp.
  • Consultation Summary – Write a one page paper discussing what you gained by having a mentor/consultant and how that individual helped you develop your skills as a supervisor.

Here is what your colleagues are saying about the program:

Moby R. Coquillard, LMFTThe CAMFT Certified Supervisor Program was definitely worth my time and energy. Our profession spends a lot of energy focusing on the licensing process and ensuring clinicians are prepared to adequately treat a wide range of disorders. The CAMFT Certified Supervisor Program helps to ensure that some focused attention is being paid to the kind and quality of supervision provided to interns and trainees.

The supervision consultation provides a rare opportunity to deepen the value of the supervision relationship, enabling the supervisor to better understand how to use his/her whole self towards guiding individual supervisees. Nowhere else have I had such a powerful opportunity to pay attention to just the supervision process. ~ Moby R. Coquillard, MA, LMFT

Erica Ive4s, LMFTMy eight years as a CAMFT Certified Supervisor have most definitely enhanced my career as a marriage and family therapist. Becoming a CAMFT Certified Supervisor has been an incredible gift and a wonderful way to contribute to our healing profession. We are helping to shape the future generations of therapists and truly make a difference above and beyond the clients and families we work with. I greatly value the responsibility that comes with being a supervisor, and so often a mentor as well, to those who I am supervising. My work as a supervisor has been a critical stepping stone in my life to get to where I am now. I whole-heartedly recommend the CAMFT Certified Supervisor Program and this includes ongoing support given by CAMFT. ~ Erica Ives, MA, LMFT

TCatherine Auman, LMFThe supervision I received was of poor quality, hence I set out to enhance my skills and become a well-trained supervisor. I feel that CAMFT offering the Certified Supervisor Program heightens our reputation of monitoring ourselves for the provision of quality treatment. I know for a fact that one of the reasons I was chosen over other candidates and hired as paid adjunct faculty and clinical supervisor at a local graduate school was because of my CAMFT Certified Supervisor status. ~ Catherine Auman, MA, LMFT

Michael L Elterman, LMFT

Supervision, like anything else, can become stale if you don’t challenge yourself. I learned quite a bit from the process and I have been a supervisor for twenty years. We are required, as LMFTs, to ensure that quality therapy is the norm, not the exception. It reflects on us all. The CAMFT Certified Supervisor Program raises the bar and benefits the entire profession. I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about providing the best “hand-up” to interns. ~ Michael L. Elterman, MA, LMFT
