CAMFT Advocacy & Legislative Developments

CAMFT members met with legislative staff members on Capitol Hill. Many thanks to CAMFT members Vanessa Areiza-King, Huda Bayaa, Nancy Brison-Moll, Margo Denison, Nanci Finley, Juan Gavidia, Nancy Haik, Jeff Kashou, Howard Levitt, Jan Mellinger, Anna Paganelli, Carol Teitelbaum, Katie Vernoy, and Amber Williams! They all braved Washington, DC last month with Executive Director Nabil El-Ghoroury and Deputy Executive Director Cathy Atkins to advocate for CAMFT Members and mental health access.

CAMFT members met with legislative staff members in their offices on Capitol Hill to discuss the bipartisan Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2019 (S 286 and HR 945), which would, among other objectives, include MFTs as Medicare providers. The Grassroots Team also hosted congressmen and congresswomen at a special reception to discuss the importance of mental health services and the roles that MFTs play in supporting the many different populations who need access to care.

Bipartisan legislation has been introduced in both the US Senate and House of Representatives that adds LMFTs as Medicare providers. The Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2019 (S 286 and HR 945), was introduced by Senator Barrasso (R-WY) and Senator Stabenow (D-MI) and Representative Thompson (D-CA) and Representative Katko (R-NY), respectfully. Great job everyone!
