Day 1 (6 CE hours)
Friday, October 4, 2019, 9:00am – 4:30pm
“Legal & Ethical Issues in Supervision”
Presented by Mike Griffin, LCSW, JD, CAMFT Staff Attorney
ALL LEVELS OF LEARNING

This workshop is intended to provide an overview of statutory and ethical standards which apply to the supervision of pre-licensed marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers and professional clinical counselors. The course will include a review of various statutory changes which went into effect on January 1, 2019, pursuant to the passage of AB 93. We will also discuss the application of legal and ethical standards to various problems that are commonly encountered by supervisors.

Additional regulatory changes concerning the topic of supervision are anticipated in the future. At the time of this workshop, it is not known exactly when such changes will occur. There will be some discussion during the workshop concerning changes that are anticipated, and CAMFT will offer further information regarding this topic as it becomes available.

This workshop is six hours in length. It satisfies the six-hour continuing education requirement for supervisors of aspiring marriage and family therapists, and professional clinical counselors. For individuals who plan to supervise associate clinical social workers, the workshop provides six of the fifteen required hours of continuing education in supervision. The workshop may also be used to fulfill a portion of the requirements for becoming a CAMFT certified supervisor, if that is your intent.

There will also be some discussion of selected legal and ethical issues that are relevant to supervision of pre-licensed therapists, such as: Scope of competency, scope of practice, standard of care, advertising and employment-related issues.

The specific content that is discussed, and the amount of time that is allotted to a particular issue may vary, depending on the needs of attendees, and other factors.

Examples of treatment scenarios, and/or complaints to licensing boards and ethics committees may be used to illustrate the issues being discussed.

Day 2 (6 CE hours)
Saturday, October 5, 2019, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
“The Anatomy of Supervision”
Presented by Ellen Kinoy, LMFT
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL OF LEARNING

This workshop will provide participants with information about both the helpful and required structures of clinical supervision, as well as how to navigate the support-directive continuum within the supervisory relationship to address common supervisory dilemmas. We will also be exploring ways to integrate trauma informed principles and an equity lens into clinical supervision and examining the comparative merits of different supervisory methods. Participants will be learning through a combination of didactic instruction, experiential exercises, videos and small group discussion. This six-hour course may be used to fulfill a portion of the requirements for becoming a CAMFT Certified Supervisor. This workshop can also stand on its own as a resource for anyone who provides clinical supervision to pre-licensed therapists and satisfies the BBS’ supervision requirements.

Day 3 (6 CE hours)
Sunday, October 6, 2019, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
“Deconstructing the Supervisory Relationship”
Presented by Ellen Kinoy, LMFT
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL OF LEARNING

This workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of their role as supervisor and the nature of the supervisory relationship, to practice supervisory interventions with proven effectiveness, and to develop their personal philosophy of supervision congruent with their theory of psychotherapy. This workshop will be both didactic and experiential, leaving participants with concrete ideas to apply immediately in supervision, as well as a conceptual framework for understanding the complexities of the supervisory relationship.

This six-hour course may be used to fulfill a portion of the requirements for becoming a CAMFT Certified Supervisor. This workshop can also stand on its own as a resource for anyone who provides clinical supervision to pre-licensed therapists and satisfies the BBS’ supervision requirements.
