"Dissociation Made Simple"
 (1.5 CEs)

Description:

Dissociation is a normal part of the human experience. Yet in many trauma-focused modalities, a great deal of fear still abounds on working with various manifestations of dissociation. This presentation seeks to debunk the myths and provide a practical and sensitive orientation to how the dissociative mind works. Participants are challenged to expand their internal knowledge of conceptualizing and healing dissociation within a trauma-focused lens for clinical practice by considering their own relationship with dissociative behaviors and responses. Participants are also given a primer on working with grounding skills in stabilization and preparation phases of trauma work and challenged to consider what kind of further training might really be necessary for them in building their skillset and competence. Your presenter Dr. Marich is not only known for her expertise as an EMDR therapy and expressive arts trainer and writer, she is also “out” about her experience of living as a woman with a long-time dissociative disorder. She emphasizes the importance of phenomenology and lived experience in expanding knowledge about dissociation, sharing insights from her own research-based inquiry while offering clinical insights.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define dissociation in a trauma-focused manner.
  2. Define dissociation in a phenomenological manner.
  3. Explain the multi-faceted, prismatic manner and at least 2 signs of dissociation may manifest in life.
  4. List 5 common myths about working with dissociative clients. Excellent, no change needed
  5. Implement at least 2-3 strategies from expressive arts therapy and mindfulness-informed approaches into early phases of trauma-focused treatment (Stabilization/Preparation), particularly for grounding and building awareness, and in later phases (Closure) for safely concluding and linking sessions.
