Although MFTs and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors will not be eligible to be reimbursed for providing Medicare services until January 1, 2024, CAMFT has received an indication from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that MFTs may be begin some of the steps required for the enrollment process now. These steps include registering/creating an account with the Identity and Access Management System (the I&A System) and obtaining a National Provider Identifier (NPI). More information about the I&A system, NPIs and instructions for completing the first two steps of the Medicare provider enrollment process can be found on CAMFT’s new Medicare Corner (coming soon).
Those who wish to prepare to complete the third step in the provider enrollment process (i.e. filling out a provider enrollment application via CMS’s electronic enrollment and revalidation system known as PECOS) have an opportunity to register for upcoming trainings. The webinars, taking place between July 12th and July 26th, will cover topics such as the new PECOS Enrollment Application, how to fill out the personal profile section of the Identity and Access (I&A) System, PECOS application data entry, Identity and Access Connections, and the PECOS application final steps. Offered by Noridian Health Solutions, the Medicare Administrative Contractor or MAC responsible for processing the enrollment applications of California Medicare providers, these webinars will allow providers to gain familiarity with the I&A system as well as the information and documentation required as part of the provider enrollment application process. Since the provider enrollment applications are lengthy and complex, CAMFT recommends that all prospective Medicare providers attend these trainings. And, keep in mind, although paper applications are available, CMS strongly encourages Medicare providers to apply electronically through PECOS as a way of reducing application processing times and avoiding potential delays.
