DECEMBER 2020 E-NEWSLETTER

Dear Members,

Typically, I think of December as a time to reflect on the past year. But 2020 has been quite a tumultuous ride! We are living and working in a whole new world.

When I do reflect on the year CAMFT has had, I am really pleased. CAMFT has made a number of remarkable steps to weather this stormy year:

  • Transitioned to remote work seamlessly, while still consulting with members on legal issues. In fact, the day that the Bay Area announced its shelter-in-place order, March 16, the entire CAMFT legal team was working remotely and answered a record number of calls.
  • Supported members in their transition to telehealth, through education, legal consultation, and advocacy to state agencies and insurance companies ensuring that MFT services could be provided safely through telehealth and be reimbursed.
  • Pivoted to virtual education, first with webinars, then to an entire virtual conference. CAMFT’s Virtual Experience ended up being incredibly well-attended, with triple the attendance of CAMFT’s in-person Annual Conferences.

These experiences parallel the experiences of most of our members this year, as indicated by our COVID-19 survey that showed that, when the COVID crisis hit,  90% of therapists successfully transitioned to telehealth in less than 15 days. On our website, you can read CAMFT’s article summarizing the personal accounts of over 2,000 mental health providers transitioning to telehealth, Teletherapy: Good Enough Therapy for a Crisis… and Beyond.

I am inspired by the personal and professional fortitude of our members. MFTs are resilient and able to bounce back and support their communities. And that is critical, because mental health support is more important than ever.

As 2020 draws to a close, I hope you are able to reflect on this year and see the positives despite the challenges. This has been a tough year, but the challenges have put a spotlight on the need for mental health support like never before. There is hope for next year, and a newfound respect on a global level for the work that CAMFT members like you do every day.

Wishing you a safe and healthy holiday season.
