Description:

Children who resist contact with a parent present unique problems for clinicians, attorneys, and the family court system. These children and their parents are often experiencing trauma from the divorce and re-experiencing trauma incidents associated with one or both parents which impedes the child’s ability to participate in a relationship with their parent.

This workshop is for therapists who find themselves working with high conflict divorce families, whether by choice or by chance. Clinicians will learn to understand how EMDR therapy can be used with this difficult population to help these families move toward repairing relationships. The Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, created by Francine Shapiro, provides a structured treatment that can be used to efficiently process the divorce trauma.

This workshop provides an overview of the AIP model and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. The workshop will illustrate how these interventions can be used in conjunction with an existing case plan. In addition, a review of guidelines and research of the effectiveness of EMDR in trauma treatment, as well as practical applications of EMDR with high conflict divorce families will be explored. Further, the workshop will present treatment strategies and recommendations for use in case planning and recommendations to help these children and their parents move past the trauma and rebalance their relationships. Myths and misconceptions about EMDR, as well as forensic issues regarding EMDR, treatment, court testimony and best practices in family court will be addressed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain Advanced Information Processing Theory and the eight phases of EMDR therapy.
  • Demonstrate the impact of trauma on family members in high conflict divorce and custody situations
  • Discuss how EMDR therapy helps resolve trauma with specific attention to families in which a child resists or refuses contact with a parent
  • Analyze risks and benefits of working with court-involved clients and demonstrate best practices with these families.
