HOT TOPICS of 2025

As CAMFT closes out 2025, many pressing topics are front-of-mind for our membership.  As we tackle all these important issues, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and highlight CAMFT’s awareness, where things stand today, and the steps we are taking next.

License Portability and National Exam:  As our members are aware, the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) is moving towards a transition to the AMFTRB National Exam, as early as 2027.  CAMFT is working with the BBS to get as many questions answered as possible to help ensure a smooth transition for pre-licensees.  CAMFT will be publishing FAQs in mid-January to help address the many questions of our membership.  In the interim, we’d love to hear from you. Let us know what questions are top of mind so that we can provide the most relevant information that matters most to our members, click here.

“Professional” Designation and Loans:  CAMFT is aware of the recent Department of Education regulatory change, declassifying certain degrees resulting in MFTs and other industries from accessing certain loans starting in July 2026.  CAMFT is collaborating with national organizations to determine the most effective ways to advocate as a unified front, and we will be providing our membership with opportunities to participate in grassroots efforts in early January 2026.  In the meantime, click here if you have questions/feedback.

Use of Doctor Title:  CAMFT has become aware of the federal case Palmer v. Bonta, which upholds state law (BPC § 2054) that generally prohibits non-physicians from using the title “Dr.” or “Doctor.”  This misaligns with prior analysis of applicable California law interpretation by both the BBS and CAMFT. CAMFT is currently assessing this issue and in the interim, we recommend using caution until further guidance is provided in mid-January by CAMFT.  If you have questions/feedback in the meantime, click here.

Ethical Code Updates:  CAMFT is excited to  announce an update to the CAMFT Code of Ethics related to technology, telehealth, and AI.  CAMFT will be putting out educational materials in early 2026.  In the meantime, if you have any questions, please  click here.
