Dear Members,
I'm excited to share a few impactful events coming up! Later this month, I’ll be presenting my annual State of the Profession webinar. This is a free, members-only event where I’ll cover the latest updates on license portability, key legislative developments, and other issues that are shaping our profession. Mark your calendars for September 30 at 10am for this important conversation!
Next month, we’ll be holding the Fall Symposium on October 17th at the Marriott Long Beach Downtown. This full-day event is focused on exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the mental health profession through engaging workshops and panel discussions. As always, you'll have a chance to meet other therapists through networking breaks, a processing session, and a rush hour social. This is a must-attend event for therapists interested in using AI in their clinical practice, while adhering to ethical, social, regulatory and compliance issues.
The countdown is already on for next year’s Annual Conference! Join us on May 1-2, 2026, at the beautiful Town and Country Resort here in sunny San Diego. While full details are coming soon, planning is already well underway, and we’re excited to host another inspiring conference for you.
I also have some important regulatory news to share. Last month, the BBS Board voted to move forward with initiating the regulatory rulemaking to adopt the AMFTRB national exam! This is another significant step forward, and we’re proud to be actively supporting both regulatory and legislative efforts to make this transition happen. While both statutory and regulatory amendments continue along their separate processes, we are working closely with BBS and AMFTRB exam administrators on key implementation activities to ensure a smooth transition for all.
As summer winds down, I want to acknowledge that this time of year can be difficult for many. September marks Suicide Prevention Month, a meaningful reminder to take extra time to care for yourselves and for your clients. In case you need a refresher, I invite you to view our Suicide Prevention Series. It’s one of our highest rated workshops, with over 100 reviews from CAMFT members who found it invaluable.
As always, I wish you all a renewed sense of purpose and steadiness as we ease back into the rhythms of work and school.
With care, Joy Alafia, MBA, CAE Executive Director
IN THIS NEWSLETTER YOU WILL FIND:
The Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) met on August 22nd and approved the proposed regulatory amendments that would formally designate the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board (AMFTRB) national exam as the clinical exam required for MFT licensure in California.
The proposed text will now start to move forward as a regulation package. Meanwhile, the BBS’s sponsored legislation Senate Bill (SB) 775, which includes the amendment that would give the Board the option to adopt the AMFTRB national exam via regulations, is still moving through the final weeks of the legislative process.
CAMFT is continuing to support both efforts. We are working closely with the BBS and AMFTRB exam administrators to ensure a smooth transition to the national exam for California applicants.
Unless Congress acts to extend today’s telehealth flexibilities, mental health providers will once again need to meet in-person visit requirements beginning October 1, 2025.
These requirements include an in-person visit within six months before the initial telehealth services, as well as a subsequent in-person visit once a year. There is an exception to the annual in-person visit requirement when the provider documents that the risks and burdens of an in-person visit outweigh the benefits.
Mental health providers working in Rural Health Centers (RHCS) and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) will not be required to comply with in-person visit requirements until January 1, 2026.
To support our members as Executive Orders are being released and implemented, we’ve launched the Executive Action Impact Landing Page — a centralized resource offering up-to-date information on these developments. The page also invites members to share how these federal actions may be affecting their practice, clients, or ethical and professional obligations.
CAMFT remains dedicated to promoting mental health, relational well-being, and emotional safety, especially in moments of fear and instability. We recognize the pain, anxiety, and trauma many communities are experiencing in the wake of recent events that are a result of administrative orders or directives.
The Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) is currently accepting applications for their California State Loan Repayment Program aimed at reducing educational loans for healthcare professionals who commit to serving in federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas or at a Federally Qualified Health Center. Licensed MFTs are eligible to receive up to $50,000 in educational loan repayment grants in exchange for a two-year service obligation at eligible sites. The application cycle closes on September 15, 2025.
There are also several grants for behavioral health entities available:

CAMFT encourages all members to attend BBS Board and Committee meetings to better understand upcoming changes to your licensure path, supervision requirements, workforce development, etc. Virtual attendance is also an option. To see upcoming meetings in 2025, click here. .
The BBS Newsletter is your go-to source for the latest updates, announcements, and insights directly from the heart of the Board of Behavioral Sciences. In 2024, mental health In counselors and marriage and family therapists officially became Medicare Part B providers. Join our expert presenter, Dr. Erin Emery-Tiburcio, as she discusses the tasks to lessen the pain of loss for individuals experiencing grief, evidence-supported treatments, and how to differentiate normal grief from prolonged grief disorder. She will also explore how to take an active approach to grief so you can help older adults manage their emotions after loss.
This is an opportunity for mental health and other clinicians, aging services providers, thanatology professionals, policymakers, and other stakeholders to gain increased knowledge of managing grief and strategies for navigating loss.

On July 11, 2025, the Long Beach-South Bay CAMFT chapter held an in-person job fair at the Torrance Memorial Hoffman Health Conference Center.
The President, Chris McKnight, had the vision of revitalizing job fairs for therapists in the Long Beach-South Bay area and bringing people together in person for a post-COVID event. This was the first Job Fair since May 2018.
Chris shared that to make the event less of a financial burden on the hosts and participants, the Board offered a discounted rate to table hosts if they would be willing to consider allowing the LBSB Chapter to advertise and promote them as a Chapter sponsor. The event ended up with 23 table hosts, of which 10 opted to become sponsors for the LBSB chapter.
There were 30 attendees throughout the day. The Chapter made close to $5,000 - a win-win for everyone involved! Chris had the opportunity to talk to many CEOs and founders and learned that some had questions as they were expanding their organizations. From those conversations, she decided to create a “Mastermind” group for them all, of which more information will be available soon.
Chris shared that due to the excitement of the event, and once the sponsors and hosts learned about the benefits of being a CAMFT and/or a Chapter member, the LBSB chapter, as well as CAMFT, gained quite a few new members.
“We're pleased to announce that the Job Fair was a great success! It was a wonderful opportunity to recruit new members and sponsors, establish a new support group for CEOs, Owners, and Founders, and to establish future partnerships with organizations that can be contacted in the future to participate in the next annual Job Fair for 2026.”
Covering one of the largest geographic regions in California, IE-CAMFT continues to show that our Chapter is more than the sum of its parts.
This past year, we built momentum through events that celebrated community and showcased the depth of our membership — from the Therapy Book Fair in Riverside, which brought authors and clinicians together in a creative reimagining of the “grown-up book fair,” to our Welcome A Board Event, where new leaders and members connected in celebration of the year ahead.
Alongside these hallmark gatherings, IE-CAMFT hosted multiple mixers, professional development gatherings, and ongoing networking spaces that highlight what makes our community so special: visibility, collaboration, and connection. These events not only strengthen ties across the Inland Empire but also amplify our chapter’s influence at the state level, where IE-CAMFT leaders are consistently shaping the future of CAMFT.
Though modest in size, IE-CAMFT has become a true powerhouse — a chapter where therapists at every stage of their career can find inspiration, belonging, and a strong voice in the profession.
CAMFT is offering chapter members a $5 discount on the 2025 Law and Ethics webinars. Take advantage of the discount and join our expert staff attorneys as they cover the essential topics MFTs need to know! Learn more.
