Governor Newsom Signs CA-AB744, Evening the Playing Field for Telehealth
AB744 requires insurance plans to reimburse their in-network providers for telehealth services on the same basis and to the same extent the health plan reimburses for in-person services. The bill would prohibit insurance plans from: 1) requiring that providers use certain corporate telehealth providers; 2) imposing an annual or lifetime dollar amount maximum for telehealth services; and 3) requiring in-person contact occur between a provider and a patient before payment is made for the services appropriately provided through telehealth. Contracted providers retain discretion as to whether telehealth services are suitable for the patient. The law becomes effective for all contracts issued, renewed or amended on or after January 1, 2021.
