November 2019 E-NEWSLETTER

Dear Members,

During this month of Thanksgiving, I’m thinking about the role of gratitude. In a classic study, people who kept a weekly gratitude journal over a ten week period were more optimistic, exercised more, and had fewer visits with physicians than people who journaled about their aggravations or frustrations (Emmons & McCullough, 2003). With that spirit in mind, I’d like to share some of the things I’m grateful for.

I am grateful for the amazing members of CAMFT who I’ve met throughout these 20 months I’ve served as Executive Director. I’m appreciative of the passion that you, our members, share with me about the communities you serve. Your dedication and willingness to share your stories makes it easy for me to represent CAMFT when I speak to legislators and stakeholders! I am thankful for CAMFT’s volunteers who help make CAMFT stronger every day. This is particularly true of the thoughtful and insightful members on the CAMFT Board of Directors, who have provided a vision for CAMFT that I’m pleased to implement.

I am humbled to work with an amazing staff. CAMFT could not accomplish what it does without our great employees! In fact, I’d like to share a huge success the staff at CAMFT had recently. The CAMFT team was recognized by Euclid, the vendor of our new AMS system, as their Rookie of the Year at their User Group Conference. Euclid noticed how cohesive the CAMFT team was in the AMS transition; sometimes changes can expose serious rifts between staff in associations. I am truly grateful to work with such a fantastic team that is cohesive, communicative, and thoughtful.

On a personal note, I’m grateful for my position at CAMFT because it allows me to see my family more regularly. For 25 years, I’ve only seen my father and brothers 2-3 times a year when I flew out to San Diego from Washington, DC. However, now that I live less than 20 miles from them, I’m able to see them every weekend (except when I’m out of town representing CAMFT!).

Reflecting on gratitude is a great way to promote self-care, important for a profession in which burnout is a risk. So, as we enter the month of Thanksgiving, I ask you, what are you grateful for?

Regards,
Nabil El-Ghoroury, Ph.D., Executive Director

WHY JOIN CAMFT AS A PRE-LICENSED MEMBER? A TESTIMONIAL FROM CAMFT PRE-LICENSED MEMBER, CECELIA “CESS” OTEYZA

“I really appreciate everything that CAMFT has to offer. By joining, I learned about the different chapters and actually joined two chapters from my area. By doing this, I found my first site and my second site to do my practicum/internship. Before joining CAMFT, I did not know where to start looking for a site. I take every opportunity to attend most of the trainings, conferences, and meetings. Everyone I have met is helpful and knowledgeable. The free insurance through CAMFT is also a huge help. CAMFT really provides so much for what it costs to be a member."
