BBS Continuing Education Requirements

All BBS-licensees (LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, LEPs) must obtain 36 continuing education (CE) credit/hours every two (2) - year license renewal period. All licensees are required to complete (6) hours of continuing education in Law and Ethics every renewal period.

Effective July 1, 2023, all new licensees will be required to complete thirty-six hours (36) hours of continuing education during their initial renewal period.  This change applies to new licensees whose initial license expires after July 1, 2023 and licensees who are renewing their license for the first time, if their renewal application is received by the BBS on or after July 1, 2023.

Also, effective July 1, 2023, applicants for licensure and licensees are required to have completed a one-time three (3) hour course in the provision of mental health services via telehealth which must include a law and ethics component.

Effective January 1, 2021, applicants for licensure and licensees are required to have completed a one-time six (6) hour course in suicide risk assessment and intervention. Applicants for licensure may satisfy the requirement through coursework obtained as part of their graduate degree program or through their applied supervised experience.

Supervisors are required to complete a minimum of six (6) hours of continuing professional development in supervision during each renewal period while supervising.

The Continuing Education and License Renewal Information Brochure is a helpful publication for keeping licensees informed of new continuing education requirements.

Continuing education must be taken from an acceptable CE Provider that is approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences, A Board-recognized approval agency, or is an accredited or approved post-secondary institution. Licensees should verify a provider's approval status at the time of the course to make sure CE credit/hours are valid.

To assist you with the task of maintaining your Continuing Education records, CAMFT has created a FREE tool that helps you keep track of your continuing education hours.  The template, available to members only, was designed by the CAMFT Legal Team to provide you with the information you need to track the continuing education hours required by the BBS for renewal.
