Michelle Sandoval, M.A., LMFT (she/her) is a neuroqueer therapist, disability advocate, and mental health educator / presenter. With 17 years of professional experience in community mental health, school systems, and private practice, she leverages her lived experience as a queer and Autistic person to provide affirming therapy to neurodivergent clients. Michelle's unique neurotype has fostered a deep curiosity about the world, particularly in her special interest in mental health, making her endeavors in learning and teaching about this field deeply rewarding and enriching.

Session Description

This presentation focuses on providing clinicians and mental health providers with an overview and understanding neurodivergency in the context of trauma informed care and nervous system function. It will explore such evidence-based practices such as poly vagal theory, safe and sound protocol listening therapy, and other nervous system-based techniques to help clients achieve better nervous system regulation and symptom reduction. This presentation will also invite participants to examine neuronormative structures/systems and how they intentionally or unintentionally cause harm to neurodivergent clients, paying special focus to individuals with intersectionalities in other marginalized communities

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  1. Define neurodivergence and name at least two ways how it applies to the nervous system
  2. Define neuronormativity and list at least one way it impacts neurodivergent individuals, including trauma in the nervous system
  3. Describe applied poly vagal theory and identify at least two strategies on how it can be applied to the treatment of neurodivergent clients
  4. Explain trauma-informed, neurodivergent affirming care and list at least two techniques on how it helps reduce risks of more severe mental illness and suicide
