June 2026 E-newsletter

Dear Members,

I hope your summer is off to a great start! I'm writing from our home base of San Diego for our first Board of Directors meeting with the newly elected Board members. Their fresh perspectives are already energizing our discussions, and I’m excited to integrate their insights as we continue our strategic path forward.

Don’t forget that this Friday, June 5, we’re hosting the Law & Ethics webinar Treating Jack: Navigating Legal & Ethical Considerations in the Treatment of Minors. Working with children can be complex, and we want to be sure that you’re equipped to handle tricky situations involving consent to treatment, mandated reporting, and court involvement. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so here.

I’m also excited to announce a FREE members-only webinar coming next week: Top Tax Deductions for California Marriage and Family Therapists. We’ve partnered with Heard Accounting to share tax insights tailored specifically for MFTs, including commonly overlooked deductions that can add up to significant savings. I hope you’ll join us on June 11 for what promises to be a very practical and valuable session.

Scholarship season is now officially open!  CAMFT™ is proud to help support the next generation of MFTs through these financial aid opportunities. Each year, we award five scholarships of $4,000 each and one grant of $2,500 to outstanding students committed to making a difference in the field. If you plan to apply for the 2027 school year, keep in mind that you may apply for only one scholarship, so take time to review each option and choose the one that best fits your goals.

National Exam Transition

NATIONAL EXAM TRANSITION: STAY INFORMED!

California is looking to possibly transition to the AMFTRB National Exam as part of the MFT licensure pathway. The Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) continues to work through the regulatory process, and additional information regarding implementation timelines and requirements is still to come.

CAMFT is actively engaged in the process and will continue to provide updates on the transition timeline. We have developed a new member resource, MFT License Portability: National Exam FAQs, to help you navigate this change and are continuing to expand the FAQ with new questions and updates. Do you want real-time updates as the BBS evaluates and makes decisions? Join our National Exam e-mail list

US Department of Education

In late April, the U.S. Department of Education released its final rule limiting federal graduate student loans for MFT students to $20,500 per year, effective July 1, 2026. The final rule was issued without making any substantive modifications to address the concerns raised by CAMFT and our coalition partners in their respective public comment letters. CAMFT continues to collaborate with our coalition partners to evaluate next steps and advocate for policies that support a strong, accessible mental health workforce. We are closely tracking two pieces of litigation that could impact the implementation of the final rule and will keep you updated on any changes as we get closer to the July 1st implementation date.

SB 903 Passes the Senate

SB 903 PASSES THE SENATE

We’re excited to share that SB 903 has officially passed the Senate.

This important bill, which was co-sponsored by CAMFT, helps protect individuals seeking mental health care by establishing clear guardrails around the use of artificial intelligence in psychotherapy settings.

SB 903 would prohibit the advertising or offering of psychotherapy services unless they are conducted by a licensed professional, while also strengthening requirements around disclosure, informed consent, human oversight, and patient data privacy protections.

The bill now moves to the Assembly.

BBS Info Update

KEEP YOUR BBS INFO UP TO DATE!

The BBS Enforcement Department has requested that all registrants and licensees respond promptly to license audit requests and ensure that their contact information remains current with the Board.

Keeping mailing addresses and other contact information up to date helps ensure timely receipt of important notices and, updates related to licensure and compliance requirements.

Education Requirements for LMFTs

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR LMFTS: BBS JUNE 16 MEETING

The BBS Workforce Development Committee is meeting on June 16 to continue its work to streamline and modernize the education requirements for LMFTs. The effort so far covers degree accreditation, core content, practicum requirements, course content and allowable remediation, and supplemental coursework requirements.

BBS Board and Committee meetings are open to the public and we encourage members to attend the upcoming committee meeting to better understand proposed changes to LMFT educational requirements and share feedback. Click here to see the list of all upcoming BBS Board and Committee meetings.

Financial Assistance Programs for MFTs

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS FOR MFTS

The Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) has announced the first application cycle for its Medi-Cal Behavioral Health Recruitment and Retention Program. This grant opportunity is designed for provider organizations to provide recruitment and retention bonuses, supervision support for pre-licensure and pre-certification practitioners, and certification/licensure and training support with the aim of recruiting and retaining behavioral health practitioners to serve the Medi-Cal population. The application period is June 1 to July 15, 2026.

Other state and federal financial assistance programs are also available to help MFTs reduce educational debt. To see a list of all state and federal financial assistance programs we’re keeping an eye on, you can visit this page.

MEMBERSHIP

5 Benefits CAMFT Members Almost Always Forget About

Your CAMFT membership works harder than you think. Here's a closer look at what resources are available to you.

Whether you joined last month or have been a member for years, there's a good chance you're not getting everything your CAMFT membership has to offer. Some benefits are well known, such as the unlimited legal and ethical consultations and digital issue of  TheTherapist, while other incredibly valuable benefits may be easy to overlook. Here's a rundown of five benefits of membership that deserve more attention.

Continuing Education Discounts

Members receive significant discounts on CEs including live workshops, online courses, CAMFT’s Annual Conference, CAMFT’s Fall Symposium, and CAMFT’s Pre-Licensed Summit. Really anything CAMFT produces has a member discount. For many members, the CE savings alone covers the cost of membership several times over each renewal cycle.

Discount on Liability Insurance

CAMFT’s Affinity Partnership with CPH Insurance gives members access to reduced premiums on professional liability coverage and free liability coverage for students. Reducing any cost to do business is always a win, especially when it is paired with so many other CAMFT benefits.

Advocacy

This one comes up least often in member surveys (and –it shouldn't!). CAMFT advocates at the state level on issues that directly affect your license, your practice, and your clients. With over 39,500 members in the state, CAMFT listens and asks its members about matters that impact them. From BBS regulatory updates to insurance reimbursement policy, the association monitors and engages so members stay protected and informed.

Peer Networking and Chapter Events

Local chapters host networking events, continuing education courses, and professional development meetings throughout California—23 locations in fact. These aren't just social; many members report finding supervisors, referral partners, and collaborators through chapter connections. Also, as MFTs, you understand the importance of finding community. Your local CAMFT chapter may just be the respite, community, and place of professional growth you didn’t know you needed.

Job Board

CAMFT’s job board lists positions across California, from community mental health to group practice to hospital settings. Sort by job type, key word, or city to find the mental health position you have been looking for or post a job and get in front of thousands of qualified MFT candidates in the state of California.

Not sure which benefits you've accessed? Log in to the member portal and review your account today.

Free CAMFT Partner Webinar

Are You Overpaying your Taxes?

Knowing which expenses to deduct from your private or group practice can meaningfully reduce your tax bill, but many therapists leave money on the table simply by not knowing what qualifies.

In this free 1-hour session (non-CE), exclusively for CAMFT members, Heard's tax professionals will cover the fundamentals with step-by-step guidance, so you can start saving right away.

We'll walk through the deductions most relevant to California marriage and family therapists, including business meals, professional travel, and the home office deduction. We will also cover commonly overlooked deductions that can add up to significant savings.

As CAMFT’s newest Affinity Partner, Heard Accounting will also be able to answer questions about their platform. Hope to see you there!

GET TO KNOW: THE GERRY GROSSMAN SCHOLARSHIP!

Gerry Grossman, LMFT

This month’s spotlight is on Gerry Grossman, LMFT – a CAMFT member for an incredible 40 years. Gerry has led Emotional Enrichment programs in preschools across the Los Angeles area. His eight‑week sessions help young children recognize and express their emotions through songs, picture‑drawing, puppet work, books, puzzles, and games. In his private practice, he continues this work by supporting young children and their families.

Gerry shared more with us about why this scholarship is important to him. “For over three decades, I led emotional enrichment groups in a number of preschools. Giving young children the opportunity to be aware of different feeling states and giving voice to these feelings in songs. through picture drawing, and puppet work will set them up to have related communication in their future.”

Intergenerational empathy has always been central to Gerry’s mission, and he tells us that establishing this scholarship is his tangible way of doing this. His hope for scholarship recipients is that they deeply understand the importance of the work they are stepping into.

To honor the living legacy of Gerry Grossman, we offer a special CAMFT scholarship to those who share the same passion for helping children. And this year, our Gerry Grossman scholarship recipient was Huong Nguyen!

Huong Nguyen 2026 Gerry Grossman Award RecipientHuong’s path into the mental health field has been shaped by her early experiences as a Vietnamese immigrant navigating unfamiliar systems alongside her family. Seeing how young children and their caregivers struggled without culturally attuned support inspired her to pursue a career focused on early intervention. Today, she’s committed to providing culturally responsive care to young children and their families across California. We’re honored to be a part of her journey!

Could you be next year’s Gerry Grossman Scholarship winner? If you're pursuing advanced training in marriage and family therapy and plan to provide mental health treatment for children up to age 10, we invite you to learn more and apply here.

CHAPTERS CORNER

IE-CAMFT, reaching out

The Inland Empire is a vast and diverse region, both geographically and culturally. The Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario region covers more than 27,500 square miles. This includes major cities, mountain communities, desert areas, foothill regions, and many communities in between. For IE-CAMFT, scale and breadth are important.

As a board, we have been intentional about asking what it means to serve the entire Inland Empire. While Riverside, Ontario, and San Bernardino remain important gathering points, our chapter’s reach cannot stop at the usual metro centers.

Our pop-up event sponsorships have become a practical and meaningful way to extend that reach. These gatherings have allowed us to connect with clinicians in communities that may not always receive the same attention, while making professional connections feel more local, accessible, and personal. The pop-ups took place at the Open House Events at Hope Wellness Counseling (January) and Thrive Psychological Services (March). In April, IE-CAMFT hosted a Pop-up Mixer & Book Exchange.

At its best, IE-CAMFT should feel valuable to members throughout the Inland Empire Region. These pop-up events are helping us move in that direction, one community at a time.
