July 2025 CAMFT E-News

Dear Members,

Marketing Toolkit WebinarSummer is officially here, and with it comes many exciting opportunities to grow, connect, achieve, and give back. CAMFT's strategic plan calls for CAMFT to identify ways to address financial barriers for MFTs. I’d like to outline just a couple of ways we are tackling that objective. First, to support you in your work, we’re continuing to offer resources designed to help you grow your practice and expand your impact. If you haven’t yet, please make sure you register for the Marketing 101: A Guided Tour through CAMFT’s Member Marketing Toolkit webinar, coming up fast on July 18th. This FREE member webinar will be led by the marketing firm EMC Communications.  You'll learn the fundamentals of building your brand, launching a professional website, and using social media to attract your ideal clients, as outlined in the Member Marketing Toolkit that launched earlier this year. There will be plenty of time for Q&A, so come prepared with your marketing-related questions! You can reserve your spot at this exclusive webinar right here

Second, we are pleased to share our new Financial Assistance Programs for MFTs resource page with links to loan repayment programs, scholarships and grants that can help reduce financial debt. If you’re working your way through student debt, I encourage you to see if any of these options might provide some relief.

Here at CAMFT, our scholarship season is officially open, and we’re proud to help support the next generation of MFTs through our specialized suite of financial aid opportunities. Each year, we award five scholarships of $4,000 each and one grant of $2,500 to outstanding students who are fully committed to making a difference in the field. If you are interested in applying for the 2026 school year, be aware that you can only apply for ONE scholarship that best suits your needs and interests, so be sure to read the descriptions of each and choose carefully. Applications are due by November 8.

Do you know an MFT who does extraordinary work? If so, consider nominating them for one of CAMFT’s Honors and Awards! We need your help in spotlighting the incredible contributions of our members, colleagues, schools, and agencies. You can submit your nominations here.

Within this eNewsletter you’ll find additional ways we are here to support you! From resources to webinars we are committed to helping you and your patients thrive. I thank you for your engagement and wish you a summer that includes self-care and renewal.

Required Notice to Clients

Don’t forget that effective July 1, 2025, licensees and registrants must provide all new clients a “Notice to Clients” that contains the following information:

  • The licensee or registrant’s full name as filed with the Board.

  • Their license or registration number.

  • The type of license or registration.

  • The expiration date of their license or registration number.

This law change is part of Senate Bill (SB) 1024, which changed and clarified two important aspects of a person’s practice of psychotherapy and supervision. Refer to the Board of Behavioral Sciences’ (BBS) FAQs for more information: Display or License/Registration Requirements and Required Notice to Consumers and Clarification on Number of Supervisees per Supervisor.

Bylaws and Ethics Revision Update

The May/June issue of The Therapist magazine featured an overview of the ongoing proposed Bylaws and Ethics updates. The articles explains the rationale behind the proposed changes, share key highlights from committee discussions, and invite member feedback through a survey to keep members engaged in the process. Please provide your input now by completing the Bylaws Survey and the Ethics Survey.

Supporting Therapists Through Executive Orders

SUPPORTING THERAPISTS THROUGH EXECUTIVE ORDERS

CAMFT understands that recent executive orders issued by President Trump – and the resulting federal directives – have raised concerns for Marriage and Family Therapists and the communities they serve. To support our members during this time, we’ve created a dedicated Executive Order Impact Landing Page.

This resource hub offers up-to-date information about the potential implications of these directives and invites you to share your personal or professional experiences with their impact. Your stories help us tailor resources and advocacy efforts to better serve the MFT community.

We also encourage you to share your experience by participating in our Executive Orders Impact Survey.

CAMFT remains dedicated to promoting mental health, relational well-being, and emotional safety, especially in moments of fear and instability. We recognize the pain, anxiety, and trauma many communities are experiencing in the wake of recent events that are a result of administrative orders or directives.

  • On August 8, CAMFT will host a free webinar titled Working with Individuals and Families Impacted by ICE Raids/Deportation. This webinar seeks to provide resources to support you as you support your patients. Please click here to register or for more information.
  • We also join those national organizations in expressing deep concern regarding the Administration’s order to eliminate LGBTQ+ youth specialized services within the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (“988 Lifeline”) by July 17, 2025. This directive runs counter to the bipartisan, comprehensive approach applied when establishing the 988 Lifeline. We recognize the country is facing a record-high suicide and suicide attempt rates, and all people deserve access to culturally competent life-saving services.  You can find the letter to congress here
  • CAMFT is reviewing the recently passed, nearly 900 page “mega” bill that was signed into law on July 4th and how burdensome requirements as well as funding cuts will impact access to mental healthcare. CAMFT ‘s review will also include an analysis of changes to Medicare, Medi-Cal, and the impact on both individuals and rural health clinics. CAMFT joined the Mental Health Workforce Coalition in sending a letter to the U.S. Senate, expressing concerns over proposed cuts to Medicaid. CAMFT will continue to advocate for funding to replace program cuts that support mental healthcare and the mental healthcare workforce for our communities.

Prop 1 Funding for Behavioral Health Entities

The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) has announced the release of its final funding round through Proposition 1’s Bond Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) Round 2: Unmet Needs Request for Applications (RFA). Awards for the Bond BHCIP Round 1: Launch Ready was announced in May 2025 and allocated $3.3 billion to 124 projects across 42 counties, supporting 5,077 residential beds and 21,882 outpatient slots.

Through this Round 2 RFA, DHCS will continue to award more than $800 million statewide to construct, acquire, and rehabilitate real estate assets in behavioral health settings that expand access to mental health and substance use disorder services. DHCS is specifically aiming to distribute grant funds to rural and remote communities with the greatest unmet needs and insufficient behavioral health infrastructure. The Bond BHCIP Round 2 Application Portal is open until October 28, 2025.

Click here to see if your entity is qualified, and to learn how to apply. This funding is available to eligible applicants including counties, cities, tribal entities, nonprofit organizations, and for-profit organizations.

BOARD HIGHLIGHTS

CAMFT’S Board of Directors convened on June 7-8 in Carlsbad to discuss strategic plan progress, review financial statements, and approve an AI Workgroup Taskforce. Read the full Board Highlights here.

BECOME A RED CROSS MENTAL HEALTH VOLUNTEER

American Red Cross Mental Health Professionals (MHP) who desire to serve their communities in times of disaster or crisis are urged to join their local American Red Cross Chapter. With its effective infrastructure and resources, the Red Cross is at the forefront of disaster response education and training. The Red Cross actively recruits, trains, and deploys mental health professionals to provide support services to disaster survivors and workers across the stages of preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery.

The American Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) is client-facing throughout the entire disaster cycle of preparedness, response and recovery. DCS response provides relief when disasters strike for those affected by residential fires, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, transportation accidents, terrorist attacks, mudslides and other man-made and natural disasters 24 hours a day, 365 days-a-year (over 70,000 disasters in the US each year). All American Red Cross assistance is free. Disaster Cycle Services activities include casework, health services, mental health, logistics, sheltering, feeding, communications, governmental liaison, community partners, etc. Disaster Action Teams (DAT) are the staff and volunteers who actually respond to the event. Red Cross Disaster Mental Health (DMH) volunteers support DAT activities and may be deployed with the Team.

Red Cross DMH volunteers often experience great collegiality and satisfaction in being able to use their mental health skills in service to the public. The Red Cross is a pioneer in emphasizing the importance of self-care and caring for its own so DMH volunteers have a prominent role in supporting the mental health resiliency of volunteers and staff who respond to disasters.

Red Cross DMH volunteers in California are mental health professionals including Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Associate Marriage and Family Therapists, graduate level Marriage and Family Therapist Trainees, and Retired Marriage and Family Therapists.

While personnel in mental health disciplines who do not meet the current eligibility requirements cannot participate in Red Cross Disaster Mental Health activity, they are encouraged to serve as volunteer providers of other client-oriented Red Cross services such as client casework services and recovery, working in shelters, and mass feeding. These vital disaster services require excellent people skills and working in close collaboration with disaster health and mental health service systems.

To become an American Red Cross volunteer:

  • Go to www.redcross.org and select “Your Local Red Cross” at the very top of the page.
  • At your chapter website select “Volunteer” to create an account in Volunteer Connection.

  • Take the required free Red Cross on-line or in-person trainings.

(1CE)

As part of the Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition's webinar series, the Coalition and NBCC in collaboration with the E4 Center, have been offering informative sessions for providers on addressing the clinical needs of older adults with mental health conditions. The next free webinar is "Substance Misuse in Older Adults: Trends, Challenges, and Solutions for Improved Care" on July 10 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM PT.

In 2024, mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists officially became Medicare Part B providers. Over the last year, as part of our overall Medicare webinar implementation series, NBCC and the Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition—in collaboration with the E4 Center—have been offering providers informative webinars on addressing the clinical mental health needs of older adults.

Join our expert presenter, Dr. Frederic C. Blow, as he discusses the unique challenges older adults face in relation to substance use and the critical need for tailored prevention and treatment strategies. CHAPTERS CORNER

GET TO KNOW THE 2025-2026 MEMBERS OF OUR CHAPTER ADVISORY COUNSEL

The Chapter Advisory Council serves our mutual membership and profession by facilitating communication and collaboration between chapters and CAMFT with the goal of increasing involvement, awareness, and membership.

  • Omar Gonzalez-Valentino, LMFT, LPCC
  • Leah DeRose, LMFT
  • Jonathan Flier, LMFT

Ashley Green, LMFTAshley Green, LMFT (Redding Regional Chapter)
Chair

This is my second year serving as a member of the Chapter Advisory Council. I was a member of the Long Beach South Bay (LBSB) Chapter Board for 4 years, in the capacity of Programs Director and Membership Director. As a licensed therapist, serving on the LBSB CAMFT board has afforded me many opportunities to advance as a therapist, including networking with other therapists, gaining access to office space and many other things. What I enjoyed the most about being on the board is the comradery between fellow board members and being able to create friendships with other therapists. As a helper by nature, joining the Chapter Advisory Council was a natural progression for me due to my passion for others and seeing them succeed.  I am looking forward to another great year on the Chapter Advisory Council and hope to encourage other therapists to reach beyond serving patients from the couch, to serving their peers and therapeutic community.

Omar Gonzalez-Valentino, LMFTOmar Gonzalez-Valentino, LMFT, LPCC (Inland Empire Chapter)
Past Chair

I have been a proud CAMFT member since 2015. After completing a full term as President of the Inland Empire Chapter, I now continue to serve our mission as the chapter’s Financial Officer. CAMFT’s support of our profession is essential to our success, and I’m honored to remain involved in a role that allows me to engage directly with chapter leaders. Having recently concluded my term as Chair of the Chapter Advisory Council, I’m optimistic for the next Chair and Vice Chair as they build upon the progress we’ve made promoting the benefits of CAMFT membership and inspiring the next generation of state-level leaders. As a lifelong student of leadership and followership, I bring a broad perspective from my experience in diverse clinical and organizational settings. I believe deeply in CAMFT’s mission and will continue serving on the Chapter Advisory Council to help advance our profession to its fullest potential.

Leah DeRose, LMFTLeah DeRose, LMFT (Central Coast Chapter)
Member

I’ve been practicing in the field of mental health for over 15 years and have been a proud CAMFT member since 2016. I served as Treasurer of the Central Coast Chapter last year and am currently serving as Chapter President. I bring leadership experience, a collaborative spirit, and a strong commitment to the growth of our profession. This is my first time serving on a State CAMFT committee, and I’m genuinely excited to connect with a wider network of professionals. I’m passionate about contributing at a statewide level, collaborating with fellow leaders, and helping shape the future of our field.

In my group practice, I oversee operations and provide leadership to a team of skilled clinicians who deliver compassionate, high-quality care to individuals, couples, and families. In my own clinical work, I specialize in helping clients navigate those struggling with anxiety, relationship challenges and/or life transitions with a warm, collaborative approach.

Jonathan Flier, LMFT, LMFTJonathan Flier, LMFT (Los Angeles Chapter)
Member

Very early on in my 30+ year journey as an LMFT, I recognized the distressing isolation being in a private practice. In 2008, I joined my local CAMFT chapter. At that time the workshops lacked a sense of connection; loneliness and alienation increased. The membership dwindled and ennui and burnout led to the decision to dissolve. I agreed to take on the role of President and built a new board. Together we created gatherings that were specifically designed to connect therapists with multiple opportunities to talk, learn about each other and form relationships that reached beyond the monthly workshops.

In 2015 I joined the CAMFT Chapter Advisory Council to help other chapters revive and enliven their offerings to their communities. I encouraged the Council and the CAMFT staff to make our yearly gathering a place of intellectual and emotional connection; experiencing the joy of an interactive community and inspire them to bring that joy back to their boards and members.

Keonna Robinson, LMFT, LMFTKeonna Robinson, LMFT (Los Angeles Chapter)
My journey in LA-CAMFT began as one of the inaugural clinical mentors in the Therapist of Color Mentorship Program (TOCMP), and from there, my role within the chapter quickly expanded. I joined the Diversity Committee and became one of the facilitators of the Black Therapists Support Group. In 2022, I was elected to the LA-CAMFT Board of Directors as the TOCMP co-chair and have since transitioned into the TOCMP Committee Chair role, while continuing to serve as a board member-at-large. In 2025, I had the privilege of being awarded the Outstanding Chapter Leadership Award, chosen by my fellow leaders on the LA-CAMFT board.

As a member of the Chapter Advisory Council, I am eager to provide support to chapters of all sizes using a diverse lens. My goal is to assist chapters with improving member engagement and fostering connections through inclusive partnerships and collaboration. In this role, I aim to pinpoint opportunities that showcase CAMFT's membership offerings, ensuring that MFTs receive the support they need and genuinely deserve.

Jodie Shea, LMFTJodie Shea, LMFT (Orange County Chapter)
Member

I have been a member of the CAMFT Chapter Advisory Council (CAC) and Continuing Education Provider Approval (CEPA) committees for the past year. In my local chapter of Orange County, I started my board involvement by serving as Secretary for three years and am currently in my second term as President. It has been a rewarding experience to connect with other chapters and learn more about the small and large organizations supporting therapists in California. I enjoy being a resource and exploring innovation in our field. Some topics that I’m passionate about are diversity, destigmatizing mental health and sexuality, exploration of opportunities outside clinical work, community, and abundance mindset. Outside of CAMFT, I am in private practice (Pillow Talk Therapy) specializing in couples/relationships, sex therapy, IFS, and attachment. I am also neurodivergent and enjoy supporting others identifying similarly both in my practice and in local and state CAMFT communities.

Vic Campbell, LMFTVic Campbell, LMFT
Board Liaison (President-Elect)

I first joined the Santa Cruz Chapter of CAMFT in 2008, and over the years, I've had the privilege of serving in various roles, including President, Treasurer, and Director-at-Large. What has always stood out to me is the way local chapters cultivate authentic connection and a strong sense of community. It was a true joy to serve with my community members to make a better chapter.

Attending events at many different chapters has been a highlight of my journey. Now, as President-Elect of the state CAMFT board and a member of the Chapter Advisory Committee, I’m more committed than ever to supporting chapter growth and participation. In all the committees I have had the honor of serving with CAMFT, our good works always circles back to the strength of our chapters. I’m excited to explore new ways to address challenges like leadership recruitment and to help chapters flourish as they respond to the evolving needs of their communities.
