Workshop Description:  

This workshop provides 2 (two) hours of continuing education on legal and ethical issues that psychotherapists commonly encounter in daily practice. Workshop attendees are asked to consider circumstances that always (or nearly always) require a therapist to take particular actions, based upon current laws and/or ethical standards. 

For example, a therapist must always practice within their scope of competence and create and maintain an appropriate treatment record. Conversely, a therapist should never offer an opinion about someone they didn’t evaluate, take sides in a client’s family law matter, or fail to document reasons for termination.    

The workshop also examines examples of actions that therapists routinely engage in, even though they really don’t have to. Examples in this category include writing a letter of recommendation for a client, speaking with clients’ attorneys, or issuing a refund to a dissatisfied client.   

Areas of emphasis during the workshop include: Writing letters for clients, working with clients involved in the legal system, and avoiding problems with termination.  

The workshop incorporates relevant laws and ethical standards, along with examples drawn from the presenter’s experience as a psychotherapist for children, adolescents, and adults across a variety of professional settings. This presentation will explore the fundamental principles underlying effective trauma treatment, emphasizing the versatility of these principles across various therapeutic modalities.  

By addressing the emotional, cognitive, somatic, and relational dimensions of trauma, therapists can create a therapeutic environment that fosters healing and recovery. Drawing from contemporary neuroscience and evidence-based therapeutic approaches, attendees will gain practical tools to implement immediately in their work with clients struggling with the lingering effects of trauma.

Workshop Description:  

Clinicians are increasingly seeing adults whose presentations resist clean formulation: chronic pain and fatigue alongside inconsistent task initiation, sensory sensitivity alongside a trauma history, high professional functioning alongside collapse at home, and a lifetime of physical symptoms attributed to stress. 

This seminar addresses what complicates neurodivergent diagnosis and treatment — and what to do differently as a result. Emphasis is placed on application rather than prevalence data. 

Three complications are examined in depth. First, medical comorbidity: chronic physical conditions occur at elevated rates across essentially all organ systems in autistic adults, joint hypermobility mediates the link between neurodivergence and both dysautonomia and pain, and fluctuating physical capacity reshapes what treatment can reasonably ask of a client. Second, race, ethnicity, and culture: current surveillance shows autism prevalence now lower among White children than among every other racial and ethnic group, with co-occurring intellectual disability disproportionately documented in Black, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Asian/Pacific Islander children — a pattern that complicates the familiar underdiagnosis narrative and carries direct implications for adult referrals. Third, the limits of the evidence base itself, which draws heavily on White, female, late-diagnosed samples. 

Participants will work from a single composite case revisited throughout, examine which interventions autistic adults report as unhelpful or harmful, and leave with a formulation worksheet and specific, scripted changes to intake, homework assignment, and somatic intervention. 

Workshop Objectives:  

By the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to: 

• Analyze how co-occurring chronic medical conditions — including chronic pain, fatigue, joint hypermobility, autonomic symptoms, and sleep disruption — alter the presentation of neurodivergent clients, and generate at least two alternative mechanisms for a behavior initially attributed to psychological resistance or avoidance. 

   

• Apply a structured formulation approach that integrates racial, ethnic, and cultural factors — including differential diagnostic visibility, masking versus code-switching, and medical invalidation — to a complex adult case. 

   

• Select and implement at least three specific treatment adaptations — including tiered capacity-based treatment planning, modified interoceptive and somatic interventions, and revised homework and goal-setting practices — for use with a neurodivergent client in the next clinical week. 

   

Workshop Description:  

Artificial intelligence is increasingly entering therapy through two distinct but interconnected pathways. Clients may use AI for self-help, psychoeducation, symptom interpretation, advice, and preparation for therapy. At the same time, therapists may use AI for case analysis, diagnostic support, treatment planning, documentation, and clinical consultation. These parallel feedback loops can shape what clients believe about themselves, what therapists notice, and how problems and solutions are constructed within therapy.  

This presentation introduces the Dual-Loop Feedback Model, a systemic framework for understanding the simultaneous operation of the client–AI loop and the therapist–AI loop. Particular attention will be given to the model’s Clinical Convergence Zone, where AI-generated perspectives enter the therapeutic relationship and must be evaluated through shared meaning, ethical oversight, divergence analysis, and relational attunement. 

Through clinical examples and applied discussion, participants will examine what happens when AI-generated narratives reinforce one another, contradict each other, intensify certainty, or overlook relational and cultural context. Participants will leave with a practical framework for integrating AI without allowing automated interpretations to replace clinical judgment, client agency, systemic thinking, or the therapeutic relationship.

Workshop Description:  

Addiction rarely exists in isolation. It impacts individuals, couples, families, and communities, often presenting alongside mental health concerns, relationship distress, trauma, and systemic challenges. This dynamic panel brings together experts from diverse addiction specialties, including substance use disorders, sex and pornography addiction, gambling addiction, and other behavioral addictions, to provide Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) with practical, evidence-informed strategies for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery support. 

Through clinical discussion, experts panelists will examine common misconceptions, overlooked warning signs, co-occurring disorders, and the role of shame and stigma in both disclosure and treatment. Attendees will gain insight into how addiction affects family systems, how trust can be rebuilt in relationships impacted by addiction-related betrayals, and what interventions promote long-term recovery outcomes.  

Workshop Objectives 

By the conclusion of this panel, participants will be able to: 

1. Identify at least two common misconceptions associated with substance use, gambling, and sex/behavioral addictions and explain how these misconceptions may impact clinical assessment and treatment. 

    

2. Describe at least three clinical indicators that distinguish problematic behaviors from diagnosable addictive disorders across addiction specialty areas. 

    

3. List at least two assessment questions that can assist therapists in identifying addictive behaviors that clients may be reluctant to disclose. 

    

4. Identify at least two co-occurring mental health conditions commonly associated with addiction and discuss their implications for treatment planning.
