MEDICARE: LICENSED PROFESSIONAL CLINICAL COUNSELORS (LPCCS) AND RETURNED OPT-OUT AFFADAVITS

Did you recently submit an opt-out affidavit and have it returned? We’re aware that some LPCCs received a letter back from their Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) with letters stating Medicare does not recognize LPCC as a provider-specialty type. In this case, you should re-submit the opt out form indicating Mental Health Counselor (MHC) as the provider-specialty type.

While Professional Clinical Counselors are recognized by Medicare, LPCCs fall under the MHC umbrella and must therefore list this valid Medicare provider-specialty type on opt out forms.

If you have more questions about opting out, you should contact your MAC or email the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) at Medicareproviderenrollment@cms.hhs.gov.
