CAMFT has developed the CAMFT License Portability Chart to provide information for LMFTs who are interested in learning more about license portability. License portability refers to the ability of an individual to transfer their qualifications for licensure in one state to licensure in another state. Currently, all 50 states regulate marriage and family therapists, and the licensing laws across the nation vary in their education, experience, and examination requirements. This Chart’s goal is to better explain what the requirements will be for a California LMFT to gain licensure in a different state.
The chart below will provide the name of the state’s licensing board, the state’s licensing board contact information, the state laws and ethical rules, a link to the application and resources related to licensure, and an overview of the licensure portability requirements for a California licensed marriage and family therapist.
Those that are interested in learning more should also view the companion California Clinical Exam Equivalency Chart.
This information was gathered in June of 2023, and thus, CAMFT strongly encourages the reader to independently verify the information contained herein and/or consult with independent legal counsel before relying exclusively on this information. As states’ laws and regulations continually change, CAMFT cannot guarantee the completeness, currency, or accuracy of the information contained herein.
CAMFT does not provide feedback about the licensure requirements of other states and will be unable to further assist with an out-of-state application. Contact information, laws, applications, and additional resources for each state’s MFT licensing board is provided in case the LMFT needs further assistance.
CAMFT License Portability Chart
CAMFT has developed the California Clinical Exam Equivalency Chart to provide information for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists who are interested in knowing if the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences’ Marriage and Family Therapist Written Clinical Examination would be viewed as an equivalent to the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy from the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB) for license portability purposes. Each state’s licensing board has the discretion to set out its requirements for the practice of marriage and family therapy. The chart below will provide the name of the state’s licensing board, the state’s licensing board contact information, the state laws and ethical rules, a link to the application and resources related to licensure, and most important if the state will accept the California Clinical Exam or not.
This Chart should be viewed as a companion to CAMFT’s License Portability Chart.
CAMFT does not provide feedback about the licensure requirements of other states and will be unable to further assist with an out-of-state application.
