A WIN FOR LICENSE PORTABILITY!

SB 679, the license portability bill, has been passed.

SB 679, the BBS’s License Portability bill, was recently signed by the Governor after passing in both houses. The bill proposes a pathway for LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCS who are actively licensed in another state and have been so for two years, to become licensed in California. Therapists who want to take advantage of this portability bill must complete continuing education coursework specific to the psychotherapy environment in California and pass a California Law and Ethics Examination. According to the BBS, the bill serves as a model for license portability reform around the country, and several other states are in the process of adopting similar legislation designed to remove barriers for mental health professionals moving across state lines.
