Jonathan W. Thompson, II
Candidate Statement

Hi!   I am Jonathan W. Thompson II, and I humbly ask for your vote. I ran to be on CAMFT’s Board of Directors to uphold the core tenets of our organization. I want to help to advance the MFT profession. Many of our members do phenomenal work each day; however, some outside the profession do not see MFTs in the same light as other Master’s Level Clinicians. Advancing our field will take efforts to educate the public on our scope of practice, assist clinicians with broadening their individual practices, and clarify the perception of MFTs at large. Through advocacy, marketing, and education, I am hopeful that MFTs can become a leader in the mental health community. Let’s open up dialogue and work to create deliverables that will make your membership meaningful.

Next, I want to work to modernize the profession. Where does social media belong? How do we move to more accurate records utilizing technology? There will be a need to have flexibility and an understanding that new ideas are what we ask those we serve to consider. If you are unwilling to make a change, I challenge you to ask yourself, “why?”

Finally, I am running to strengthen CAMFT as an organization. I am involved locally and on the state committee level to work toward increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. The strength of CAMFT lies with those willing to stand with those not in positions of power. Recruitment must occur at all levels starting with high school students, to build a pipeline to create a solid CAMFT body which looks like California, has diverse thinking, and can reflect on the areas needing improvement. Creating a more diverse pipeline will allow for more opportunities to have equity and be more inclusive. One does not lose when someone else makes a gain. We all win when there are a variety of voices in the decision-making seats.

I look forward to representing all of you. Thank you for considering my candidacy.
