Board Highlights March 2024

The following notes highlight discussion and action from CAMFT Board of Directors meeting, and reception held March 1 – 3, 2024 in Sacramento, CA. Chapter to Chapter Reception: The CAMFT Board invited Board members of the Sacramento and Sierra Foothills chapters to an informal reception. The gathering’s attendance was lower than expected.

Financial Report:
The Board reviewed the December 2023 financials: including revenue and expenses. The Board asked questions about reports and processes. The Board was updated on the new investment advisor, Axxcess. The Board reviewed CAMFT’s 2023 audit report, including the receipt of a clean opinion from the auditor.

Asset Management:
The Board was updated on CAMFT’s new office headquarters, including renovations to the space and a possible move-in date. The new CAMFT address is 3298 Governor Dr., #22627, San Diego, CA, 92192.

Strategic Plan:
CAMFT Executive Director, Joy Alafia provided the Board with an update on the strategic plan.

  • DEI - CAMFT Board and Staff had DEI training via Culture Ally, which will continue through the next quarter. Staff is reviewing programmatic structures for deeper integration with DEI.
  • Advocacy - An update was provided regarding efforts for all members to get educated on Medicare, and to take appropriate action with regards to either opting in, or opting out of Medicare. The Board was informed of efforts by AAMFT in advocating for states utilizing a model licensing law that provides a faster, feasible, and more realistic pathway to license portability across state lines versus any effort to create a MFT Compact. CAMFT continues to advocate for the adoption of the National Exam, while also advocating for addressing any potential racial bias in the exam.
  • Membership & Marketing – CAMFT’s marketing agency has begun initial work to identify a target audience to measurably improve the awareness of MFTs.
  • Technology – CAMFT is reviewing AI and navigating the technology as it relates to the MFT profession.

ED Report:

The Board reviewed CAMFT operations noting membership numbers have reached 36,710. The Board was updated on the Bylaws Committee discussion regarding bylaws amendments including discussing pre-licensee voting rights, pre-licensee seats on the Board, and dual licensed members on the Board. Proposed changes will be presented to CAMFT members and Board for feedback prior to adoption. Alafia also reported on the hiring of an Events and Education Manager and a State Government Affairs Associate. The Board reviewed bills of interest through CAMFT’s Legislative Update . AC Opt Out Update:
Alafia updated the Board on CAMFT’s State Political Action Committee (PAC) opt-out implementation date and tentatively scheduled April communications, with a late Spring launch date. Members have the option to ‘opt-out’ of a $4 contribution to CAMFT’s State PAC. Members will still have the option to contribute more to the State PAC, if desired. A communication plan will be deployed to educate members on the process to provide ample notice for those who wish to opt-out of the contribution at the time of their membership dues renewal.

Additional Discussion:
