Celebrate: The Central Coast and Monterey County Chapters’ Wellness Retreat receives national recognition.

  • Michele Champion was invited to present at the National Conference for Chapter Relations Professionals, held in Washington each year.
  • Her presentation focused on the Wellness Retreat that the Central Coast Chapter offered to their Board members, volunteers, and members in 2024,  and with the Monterey County Chapter in 2025.
  • Conference attendees were enthusiastic about the possibility of offering a similar event to their members, particularly given its potential to increase membership and boost engagement in group activities.
  • Congratulations to the Central Coast Chapter for initiating this event and then taking it even further by collaborating with another Chapter!

Thank you: Chapters Showcasing at the Annual Conference

  • Thank you to the Board members and volunteers who showcased their Chapters at the Annual Conference on May 1 and 2 at the Town and Country Hotel in San Diego.
  • On Friday, the East Bay, Inland Empire, Long Beach-South Bay, Orange County, San Diego, and Santa Clara Valley met with conference attendees.
    Chapter volunteers
  • The Los Angeles, Redwood Empire, Sacramento Valley, San Diego North County, San Fernando Valley, Santa Barbara, and Sierra Foothills Chapters were represented on Saturday
    Chapter volunteers
  • The Chapter Showcase area was a highlight for many attendees, and the connections formed with the Chapter leaders there inspired many to join a Chapter.

Tip: The 7 Hidden Beliefs That Hold Even Top Leaders Back

  • I need to be involved.
  • I need it done now.
  • I know I’m right.
  • I can’t make a mistake.
  • If I can do it, so can you.
  • I can’t say no.
  • I don’t belong here.
  • These self-talk mantras aren’t character flaws. They’re old success strategies. When you can identify the belief you’re leading from, you regain choice. Awareness is the first step to unblocking.

Tip: When can a Board meeting move into a closed session?

  • A Chapter board meeting can move into a closed (executive) session when sensitive or confidential matters need to be discussed.
  • While practices can vary by organization and bylaws, common situations include:
    • Personnel Matters (Hiring, evaluation, discipline, or terminations)
    • Legal Issues (Consultation with legal counsel, Risk management matters)
    • Confidential or Sensitive Information (Member or client issues/Complaints or investigations)
    • Contract Negotiations (Vendor or partnership negotiations)
    • Board-Specific Matters (Board performance or internal conflicts/Succession planning)
  • Best Practices
    • Ensure closed sessions are allowed by your Chapter’s bylaws or policies
    • Clearly state the reason for entering closed session in the minutes
    • Limit attendance to only those who need to be present
    • Keep confidential minutes or a general summary (without sensitive details)
    • Document any final decisions or votes in the regular meeting minutes

Reminder: Do you have financial questions throughout the year?

CEPA/Education/Events

Tip: May presenters receive CEs for presenting?

  • Per the BBS: Presenters can receive CEs for the workshops they facilitate, but only one time during their licensing renewal. To go into a bit more detail, if they offer the same course 20 times, they can still receive credit only once. If they offer several different courses, they can receive CE credit, but only up to 18 hours during their licensing renewal.
  • Per the BBS: § 1887.3. Continuing Education Course Requirements and Credit for Specified Activities:
    (e) If a licensee teaches a course provided by a board-accepted provider, the licensee may claim credit for the course, receiving the same number of hours of continuing education credit as a licensee who attended the course. The licensee may claim the course only once during a single renewal period. A maximum of 18 hours of continuing education may be met by teaching courses during a single renewal period.>

Tip: Why should Pre-Licensed members join CAMFT?

  • Reminder: Only CAMFT members may be members of a Chapter
  • Sometimes Chapter members forget what first inspired them to join CAMFT as a Pre-Licensed member, so each month we’ll spotlight a few great reasons you can share with prospective CAMFT Pre-Licensed members
  • The January - April newsletters listed reasons 1-7 (Click on the Archived newsletters on the navigation bar on the left).

Reason 9:

Advocacy and Grassroots Opportunities:  CAMFT continues to advocate for behavioral health professionals, including Pre-Licensed MFTs, at the state and national level. CAMFT not only participates in meetings of the Board of Behavioral Sciences and its committees, but also represents your interests in stakeholder forums.

Technology/Website/Social Media

Tip: Cybercriminals also target smaller associations/companies

  • Why? Because they assume that these organizations have fewer defenses in place to prevent cyberattacks
  • Remember these tips to stay safe (courtesy of KnowBe4):
    • Never share your password with anyone. Additionally, use complex passwords and different ones for each of your online accounts or services.
    • Look for red flags in emails, such as a sense of urgency or a request for sensitive information. Carefully check the domain of the sender’s email address and remember that any domain can be spoofed.
    • Don’t click on links or open email attachments if you don’t know who sent them, why you received them, or what they contain.
  • When you’re in doubt, follow your Chapter’s process for reporting suspicious emails. If you’re not sure how to report the email, discuss with your Board.
