Curt Widhalm, LMFT is the owner of Real Honest Therapy in Encino and West Los Angeles that specializes in working with teenagers and provides EMDR and comprehensive DBT. He is a member of the CAMFT Ethics Committee and a lecturer at California State University Northridge where he teaches Law & Ethics in the MFT program. Curt is also the co-host of “The Modern Therapist’s Survival Guide” podcast.

Artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies are no longer distant concepts - they are actively reshaping the landscape of mental health care. From AI-generated clinical notes and diagnostic algorithms to the evolving nuances of telehealth, therapists are facing unprecedented ethical gray areas. How do we embrace innovation while safeguarding client confidentiality, maintaining professional boundaries, and upholding the standard of care? 

This  presentation provides insight into the latest technology and AI-centered updates to the CAMFT Code of Ethics. This workshop will explains the new ethical guidelines and provides actionable frameworks for integrating technology safely into clinical practice. Attendees will learn how to protect their practice, empower their clients, and navigate the digital frontier with clinical confidence and ethical integrity. 

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key updates to the CAMFT Code of Ethics regarding the use of artificial intelligence, telehealth, and digital technology.
  • Evaluate the ethical risks and benefits associated with utilizing AI tools (e.g., AI scribes, chatbots) in clinical practice, specifically concerning client confidentiality and informed consent.
  • Apply the updated CAMFT ethical decision-making frameworks to complex, technology-driven clinical scenarios.
  • Develop updated policies for their own practices that reflect current technological standards and protect both the clinician and the client.
