What ARE You?" Considerations for Therapy with Mixed-Race Clients

Description:

As the number of individuals identifying as mixed-race continues to rise rapidly in the United States, mental health professionals are increasingly called upon to support clients navigating complex personal and social identity experiences. This training offers an in-depth exploration of the historical, legal, and sociocultural factors that shape mixed-race identity development. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the distinctions between race, ethnicity, culture, and nationality, and how these intersect in the lives of mixed-race clients. The training will also highlight common clinical themes and provide practical guidance for assessment and treatment strategies that are informed, inclusive, and responsive to the unique experiences of this growing population.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the difference between race, ethnicity, culture, and nationality when exploring mixed-race identity.
  • Identify at least one basic history, law, and social factor which have influenced mixed-race identity development in the US.
  • Analyze at least one theme and mental health consideration relevant to assessing and conceptualizing mixed-race identity in treatment planning.
  • Implement at least one culturally competent intervention when interacting with and treating individuals who identify as mixed-race.
