Sarah Klein - a former gymnast from Lansing, Michigan - is an attorney at Manly, Stewart & Finaldi and one the nation's leading voices for victims of sexual abuse. Klein and her team have been heavily involved in the most significant sexual abuse actions litigated across the nation, assisting in the recovery of nearly two billion dollars-through trial and settlement-on behalf sexual abuse victims.

Manly, Stewart & Finaldi has represented hundreds of victims of sexual abuse in medicine (Nassar/ Michigan State, Anderson/ University of Michigan, Tyndall/USC, Heaps/ UCLA, Barto/ Duke Lifepoint), schools, churches, camps, athletics and more.

In addition to substantial financial settlements and verdicts, Klein has required numerous institutions to make policy changes to ensure no child under their care is ever abused again. Klein is a fierce advocate for statute of limitations reform. She regularly testifies in front of state and federal legislative bodies and was among the small group of key and notable people invited to the Child Victims Act bill signing in New York State in February 2019.

Klein has won numerous national awards, including the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2018 ESPYs. In 2022, she was named a SUCCESS Magazine Woman of Influence. CBS This Morning profiled Klein in their Emmy nominated series, Note to Self. Past change-makers profiled in the series alongside Klein include Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, and Jimmy Carter.

Katherine Schwarzenegger profiled Klein in her New York Times Bestseller The Gift of Forgiveness. Additionally, Klein was featured in the number #1 show on Netflix Cheer alongside her clients bringing the topic of sexual abuse to the forefront of the series. Klein is seen regularly on television, radio, and in print media.

She is the proud mother of two girls.

Description:

In a facilitated discussion, former elite gymnast Sarah Klein will share her personal story of trauma, resilience, and abuse within a trusted institutional setting. Drawing from her experience and her work as an attorney and advocate, Ms. Klein will reflect on the long-term impact of trauma, the challenges of reclaiming agency, and the importance of being believed and supported. 

Attendees will gain insight into the complex journey of healing, including the role of voice and choice in recovery. This session will also explore how personal healing can intersect with advocacy and systemic change, offering valuable perspectives for clinicians who work with survivors of trauma. 

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to: 

  • Explain the impact of childhood trauma within trusted institutions on long-term emotional, relational, and identity development. 
  • Identify at least three trauma-informed principles (e.g., agency, voice, validation, systemic awareness) that support healing and recovery in survivors of abuse. 
  • List at least one principle of trauma-informed practice, including increased sensitivity to power dynamics and client-paced healing in clinical or professional settings.
