Pre-Licensee E-news

Welcome to the inaugural edition of our new Pre-licensed newsletter!

The Pre-licensed Committee is excited to bring you this original newsletter packed with helpful information including:

Rebecca HinesMy name is Rebecca Hines and I sit on CAMFT’s Board of Directors as the Pre-Licensed Director-at-Large.  My role is to represent and support you – one of the almost 10,000 pre-licensed members of CAMFT!

As an AMFT myself, I know first-hand how confusing and challenging the road to licensure can sometimes be. This newsletter was designed with that understanding in mind. Each quarter, we will share important information, provide help and tips, and answer whatever questions you have, whether you’re still in the classroom, in a trainee role, or working as an Associate. I hope that this newsletter will become a trusted resource for you as you work through the complex and sometimes complicated path to becoming a licensed MFT.

I won’t be doing this alone. I’d like to introduce you to the members of the Pre-licensed committee, who have been working with CAMFT staff to bring you content that we hope is interesting, relevant, and helpful.

Maureen Houtz, LMFTMaureen Houtz, LMFT, brings many years of experience to the pre-licensed committee; in fact, she has been licensed since 1986. Throughout her career, she has taught at the university level, supervised Associates, worked as a subject matter expert for the BBS, mentored other LMFTs, and directed a counseling center. Currently, Maureen lives and works in Long Beach, and is serving her second term on the CAMFT Board of Directors as one of the Clinical Directors-at-Large. We are very fortunate to have her experience on our Pre-Licensed Committee.

Magdalena Werne, AMFTMagdalena Werne, AMFT, graduated from Pepperdine University in 2022 and completed her traineeship at a nonprofit in Pasadena specializing in grief and loss. Soon, she hopes to serve trauma populations, specifically childhood trauma survivors, transgenerational trauma, and medical trauma. Magdalena is also very busy these days participating in various clinical trainings. She has completed phase one of Brainspotting and is currently studying levels one and two of the Gottman approach as well as Internal Family Systems (IFS). It is a wonder that she has time for anything else! But she considers volunteering for the pre-licensed committee to be an honor and is thankful for the resources provided by our organization.

Arti Patel, AMFTArti Patel, AMFT, graduated last May from the University of San Francisco and is now working as an AMFT in Santa Clara County.  She provides outpatient services to a diverse population of adults 18+ with severe and persistent mental health conditions, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, PTSD, and other co-occurring conditions. In addition to providing individual therapy, Arti also facilitates an Art Therapy group and a Grief and Loss group. She also provides case management services, risk assessments, safety plans, and more, at a residential care facility.  Arti enjoys working on a cross-functional team with psychiatrists, nurses, and rehabilitation counselors.  With a schedule that full, we are lucky to have her on our committee!

Thanks to these volunteers, we are tackling some important topics in this issue, including taking the Law and Ethics licensure exam, the new telehealth training requirement, and a tour of the resources available on CAMFT’s Pre-licensed Corner. We’ve also included a Pre-licensed Member Spotlight, highlighting pre-licensed CAMFT member, Thomas Roide, talking about coming to the MFT profession as a second career.

Have thoughts about what you’d like to see in an upcoming newsletter? Questions that you’d like us to answer? A great candidate for a future Member Spotlight? Please send an email to hpd@camft.org and let us know! We’d love to hear from you.

With warmth,

Rebecca Hines, AMFT
