JUNE 2022 E-NEWSLETTER

Summer is here, though we still have work to do. Over the next few months and years, CAMFT and the mental health profession will undergo many new and exciting changes and challenges.

As we announced last month, CAMFT is excited to welcome our new Executive Director Joy Alafia, CAE. The Board of Directors and staff have had the pleasure to get to know Joy in the last few weeks; not only learning about her impressive professional background but also getting to know her personally. I believe with abundant confidence that CAMFT is in great hands with Joy!

Also on most therapists' minds, is curiosity and trepidation regarding what a post-COVID therapy model may look like. Where do telehealth and in-person therapy fit moving forward? How does state licensure intersect with state boundaries? What roles will the California MFT play in this new model? CAMFT is dedicated to shaping the therapy landscape in California to create and maintain jobs for MFTs, ensure timely access to care, and further the recognition of mental health as a necessity for all.

On a somber note, the mental health community must now determine what role they wish to have in the mass violence crisis that is plaguing our nation. Is there a responsibility for all stakeholders to come to the table to discuss what can be done to end the mass violence crisis, including the mental health field? How does accountability play out? CAMFT, as the largest mental health provider organization in California, has a duty to step-up in this time of crisis and ask, “How can we help?”

CAMFT has a long list it must tackle in the coming months and years. Without hesitation, I can assure you that CAMFT is as strong as ever, and together we can move mountains for California MFTs and the mental health consumer.

I sign-off by thanking the Board of Directors, volunteers, and staff for allowing me to help CAMFT through this transition. And, a special thank you to the members of CAMFT for entrusting me with your professional association. It has been an honor and a privilege.

Wishing you a peaceful summer.
